Measuring and Estimating Exposure for Safety Analysis

5/21/2019

This CwC session will focus on topics that center around bicycle and pedestrian crash rate analyses, current methodologies and how they have been put into practice. Shawn Turner will be speaking about the FHWA Guide for Scalable Risk Assessment Methods for Pedestrians and Bicyclists (Report No. FHWA-SA-18-032), which details risk assessment and exposure estimation approaches at facility-specific and areawide geographic scales. The three basic exposure estimation approaches included in the Guide are 1) site counts; 2) demand estimation models; and 3) travel surveys. Huyen will be speaking about their study which examined spatial and temporal patterns of active travel in 20 US metropolitan areas between 2000 and 2016 using repeated counts of bicycle and pedestrian traffic. A number of strong spatial predictors of bicycle and pedestrian traffic volumes included job density, green space, and the presence of bicycle facilities (e.g. bike lanes and off-street trails). Plan to join members of TRB’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Data Subcommittee in this interactive, crowd-sourcing webinar aimed at building our understanding around data needs and uses to inform crash rate analyses! Join us May 21, 2019 at 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT to share your story.

The majority of the time will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions and to discuss their experiences estimating exposure, predicting crashes, and analyzing bicycle or pedestrian crash rates, and how these metrics are used.

Members of the Bike and Ped Data Subcommittee will facilitate the conversation. Participants will include:

• Host: Nathan Hicks, AICP, Transportation Planner, CDM Smith

• Panelists:

o Huyen Le, Ph.D. candidate, Virginia Tech

o Shawn Turner, Senior Research Engineer, Texas A&M Transportation Institute
