Level 3 Combined Driving Event, Morgan Park, Warwick

Saturday & Sunday 3/4 October 2009

Competitors started rolling into Morgan Park on the Thursday before the weekend event, with the balance arriving Friday. After Jim Cassidy the Technical Delegate (TD) had checked and approved the courses, drivers came out early Saturday to inspect the cones course, before they went and prepared their horses for Dressage and Cones, which were held following each other commencing at 9.00am. Lex and Jan Young, the dressage Judges, were faced with two new drivers to CDE's, Jerry Murphy and Eugene Dillmann, and one very new horse, Greg Bowdler's Saddlebred x Friesian/Cob gelding. Lorraine Stewart with her magnificent Welsh Mt. Pony, Barnhill Froddo, topped the Dressage. She just pipped Deanna Hibberd by one penalty point, with Greg Bowdler's Madely Park Tarquin Samuel a couple of points further back in third place.

Rex Walker and Janet Seddon kept the cones competition moving. Rick Luly had the smartest round in cones with no balls down and by far and away the fastest time.

Next was Greg Bowdler with one ball down and third was Deanna Hibberd with no balls down but time penalties.

The marathon course was not super long and contained five very good obstacles, probably the best at Morgan Park for some time. There were options, plenty of them, short or long, tight or flowing - you take your pick. Best marathon score with 39.8 penalties was Del Cavanagh from the small pony class with Phantom. She just beat Greg Bowdler with 40.2 penalties and third was Deanna Hibberd with 45.23 penalties. The water obstacle was once again one of the highlights, this year with two short options through the water to two much longer options staying dry. This is where Del stole the march on the others.

Thanks to the competitors for their support with Caboolture, Cooloola, Jimboomba, Range and Warwick clubs being represented. Thanks to Jim Cassidy fo TDing, all the Judges, and Linda Doulin for looking after the food and with the help of Annie Margach and Paul Humberdross for organizing a Saturday night meal. Thanks to the many stewards for making the marathon run smoothly.

The overall results were, first Greb Bowdler with 89.7 penalties, second Deanna Hibbern with 92.89 penalties (great to see Deanna back driving CDE's after a longish absence - she has lost none of her ability) and third was Del Cavanagh with 108.3 penalties. At presentations David Rozynski, QLD CDE Convenor, presented all those drivers who completed the Level 3 event without elimination and who have not already received one previously, a Queensland Combined Driving cap. Receiving these were Del Cavanagh, Eugen Dillmann, Deanna Hibberd, Jerry Murphy and Jill Seary. Congratulations to all concerned.
