three parliament members are implicated in the biggest case of sexual abuse of children in ukraine’s history, while the father of two children, himself a journalist, has been detained as the main suspect in the case.

dmytro polyukhovych, a journalist from ictv channel and contributor to zerkalo nedeli newspaper was detained two months ago and remains in custody on court orders, according to the general prosecutor’s spokesman. he is the main suspect in the criminal case started in may and classified as “corruption of minors.”

three deputies from yulia tymoshenko’s bloc in parliament are also named as accomplices, as well as officials from a childrens’ camp and a priest.

“this is inexpressible horror. the children pointed to everyone who’s is publicly mentioned. they told us the details and are ready to identify [them], even by their sexual organs,” said tetyana montyan, the lawyer handling the case on behalf of the children and their mother since april this year.

the mother of two children, a boy and a girl, have been ringing the alarm bells since the beginning of the year, when her children told her their adopted father had raped them on many instances, starting three years ago in a children’s camp.

they said their adoptive father had accomplices, and these affairs were videotaped. the police later confirmed this information, and also restored 32,000 pornographic photos and video clips on polyukhovych’s home computer after his detention. the police also found that he sold some of this information to porn websites, and received payment to an internet-based account. he also allegedly ran a website offering sexual services with children.

victoria belova, spokeswoman for the interior ministry, confirmed these and other details in the case. she said that the evidence against the main suspect is so strong that “he won’t be able to wiggle out of this one.”

the gruesome details of this case had originally been spelled out in an oct. 7 letter of address by hryhoriy omelchenko to president victor yushchenko. the letter itself was leaked to the press, but not 32 pages of attachments with records, evidence and testimonies. omelchenko confirmed the documents’ authenticity to the kyiv post, but said he had delivered them in person and will enquire further how they could have been leaked.

“the children were systematically raped in the last three years. there are assessments by psychologists, who checked the truthfulness of the children’s and their mother’s statements with the help of a lie detector. there wasn’t a single answer where experts could say they’re not telling the truth,” said omelchenko.

according to his latetr, children named parliament deputy victor ukolov, and priest vadym payevskiy as those who “took part in rape and group orgies” and four top officials from artek, a famous children’s camp in crimea as those who “participated in rape,” which allegedly took place in a flat specially hired for the purpose.

ukolov denied allegations in his personal blog on ukrainska pravda on oct. 15, but said he has already fled kyiv to avoid further trouble. “i have left kyiv. i am staying in a faraway village, trying to understand where my mistake was,” he wrote.

he confessed that he knew polyukhovych, and even gave him $2,000 to hire a lawyer in may, when he was divorcing his wife she came out with accusations of sexual assault of their adopted children. “i don’t see what i could have done differently,” ukolov wrote. “possibly, i could have called olena [the mother of children]. as far as the rest is concerned, my conscience is clear.”

lawyer montyan said the children described how other children, poorly dressed, were singled out in the camp and assaulted. she said the kids could have been orphans from boarding schools – they’re often sent to artek, a state-owned camp in crimea.

she also said byut deputies ruslan bogdan and serhiy teryokhin were also named: “these surnames were named to me by the children,” she told the kyiv post.

teryokhin said he was going to sue the mother of the two children for spreading untruthful information about him. “yesterday i laughed at this whole situation because it’s too absurd to be taken seriously,” he told ukrainski novyny news agency on oct. 15.

teryokhin and the other deputies were allegedly recognized by the children who were shown the deputies’ photos from the parliament’s website. the children said these were the people who assaulted them in a flat somewhere in kyiv.

the byut deputies implicated in the case insist that it is fabricated and politically motivated. ukolov, who until recently was in charge of advertising issues of yulia tymoshenko’s presidential campaign, said he was quitting politics at least until the election to avoid more smear campaigns.

“just think about it – we’re electing a president of the state, but instead of development programs and candidates’ achievements in the past we’re having to chew the fictitious shit thrown at us by the party of the regions,” ukolov wrote in his blog, referring to the initial accusations against deputies made by borys kolesnykov, a regions deputy, on oct. 13.

omelchenko, who has been overseeing the case for several months, was a byut deputy until oct. 14. he quit because of the scandal involving colleagues from his own bloc. he said he has also been warned on that day to make sure the mother and children are protected, otherwise “something can be done to influence their mind or eyesight so they cannot identify the rapists,” he said.

there are also fears that the deputies’ names were leaked to the press to allow them to escape justice. “ukolov? they say he’s already in hiding. his brother is not picking up the phone. i think we are unlikely to see him, just like [victor] lozynsky,” said montyan.
