Amelia Island

From March 11 to March 14, 2008, twenty six Bank and Fund retirees, their spouses and friends, spent time together on Amelia Island where spring was arriving but it was still pretty cool, especially for those coming from South Florida.

We had dinner Tuesday evening at the historic Florida House Inn, Florida's oldest surviving hotel. The food sounded good but, for most of us, was very disappointing once it hit our tongues!

The next morning, bundled up in jackets and blankets (that the captain very generously provided), we took a two-hour boat tour along the Intracoastal Waterways and along the western shoreline of Cumberland Island. The captain was an amazing story teller and we learned a lot about Amelia Island, the shrimping industry, Caroline Kennedy's wedding on Cumberland Island and much more.

The warm afternoon sun took us all in different directions, bicycling, walking the beach and nature trails, visiting Fort Clinch and shopping. Early the next morning we gathered at the 1935 Nassau County Jail, now Florida's only oral history museum. A town that has flown eight different flags sure has lots of history. From there the museum docent took us on a tour of the historical homes and churches of Fernandina Beach. Then it was off to some more shopping and sightseeing on your own.

Dinner was at Restaurant Espana where we delighted in different wines and sangria, and delicious dishes and deserts. What a lovely end to another gathering!
