A note on capitalization:
Capitalize when...
... you're referring to a person by his or her name (Peter, Paul, Mary, etc.)
... when you use a prefix to someone's name (St. Sebastian, Ste. Anne, Saint Cecilia, Blessed Clara Fey, etc.)
... when you do either for any member of the Trinity (God, Holy Spirit, Jesus, Lord, Savior, Father, etc.)
Do not capitalize when...
... you're using a title as a noun rather than a prefix (ex. The saint who didn't believe Jesus returned was Thomas.)
church
Do not capitalize the word "church" when you refer to a building unless you are referring to the entire name of the building.
Ex. I went to church at the Church of St. Mary.
Church
Capitalize the word "Church" when you are referring to the larger body of the followers of the Roman Catholic faith.
Ex. Jesus' Church on earth is led by Pope Francis.
gods
Do not capitalize the word "god" when you are referring to a false god or a god from another religion.
Ex. Zeus was the leader of the Greek gods.
God
Capitalize the word "God" when you're referring to Jesus, the Father, or the Holy Spirit, or the entire Trinity as one.
Ex. I prayed to God that I would pass my next math test.
