Extra Credit?

Extra Credit Opportunity: Quarter 1

Many students believe (incorrectly) that it is impossible to study for math. This is simply not true! Your task is to create a public service announcement that can be used to educate your classmates in ways to study for math tests and quizzes as well as how to take math tests and quizzes.

Your PSA can take many different formats:

  • Poster (8.1x11 paper or posterboard)

  • Radio ad (& transcript)

  • Commercial (& transcript)

  • Newspaper column (opinion piece)

  • Brochure

It should communicate all of the following:

  • 5+ different strategies to study for math and when each is most effective

  • 3+ tips on how to best take math tests and quizzes

  • 4+ tips for things to do when you're absolutely stumped

  • Sources online that validate that your study methods and test-taking strategies will work (research articles, test-prep sites, etc.) - this is your works cited

You need to back up your ideas with evidence that these methods work. You should use research articles, test prep websites, or other valid online sources to prove that your ideas will result in higher test grades.

This is due October 23 so that it can be entered into your quarter grade.

How is Extra Credit Added?

To preserve the integrity of the grades in this class, extra credit can only be given up to 100%. No grades over 100% will be issued due to extra credit. Students who earn bonus points on tests and quizzes may receive an individual test or quiz grade of over 100%. Final quarter grades will all be rounded down to 100%.

Extra credit is added to the lowest test or quiz grade a student has earned over the course of the quarter. As extra credit projects vary in complexity, so the percentage added will vary each quarter.

Completing an extra credit project is not enough to guarantee that a student will earn extra credit on their test or quiz. The project must be completed to a high standard and earn a 95% or better as if it were graded for credit in order to earn any extra credit.
