Week 1 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

This week's assignment is very interesting and fun, as we will work on the laser cutting machine and the 3D printing machine after preparing our files through some softwares When choosing a design from an open source library

I chose the mobile holder in the form of an octopus arm for 3D printing because it is a nice and cool idea and we also need it for easy carrying of the mobile

I found the design through this link( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:607518 )

I chose Tiger shaped coaster for 2D cutting on a laser cutting machine

I found the design from this link ( https://3axis.co/tiger-1-dxf/vd1l8z7m/ )

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

plywood 3mm for laser machine

malky ML1930 CO2 manual laser cutter machine

RDWorks (software for laser machine)

PRUSA i3 MK2 3D printer

cura (software for 3d printer)

pla filament material for 3d printer

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

In this assignment, we used ready-made designs from different sites because the goal this week is to identify and use the machines, and in the coming weeks we will make designs of our own

I chose the design by entering the site and discussing the instructors, then choosing one of them

*for 3d design (mobile holder in the form of an octopus arm)

1-I browsed( Thingiverse )for the 3D design and download it in an *.STL format

2-I imported the file to cura

3-I checked the size of the product and prepared the print settings, which are

*infill:10%

*layer height :0.3mm

*support :touching buildplate

*for 2d design (Tiger shaped coaster)

1-I browsed (3axis.co )for the 2D design and download it in an *.DXF extension

2- and imported the file to RDWorks

3- Then I made the settings for scaning and cutting, which are :

for cuttind power:65,speed 25

,power:55,speed :200

for scan power:30, speed 150

,power:10, speed 150

4- finally i saved the file in .RLD extension

Development/Implementation Process

I saved the file in G-code format so that the printer can read it and moved it to the memory card. I made sure of the exact location of the product on the printer panel and started printing

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

After making sure that the file was saved in rd format, I transferred it to the flash memory and saved it on the laser cutting machine, then the machine started cutting the desired shape

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

I faced a problem with the program for the laser cutting machine, as it does not accept entering any files to be modified, My Collaborative instructor menna helped me solve the problem and contacted me until it was resolved..The file had to be moved to another location so that the program could read it

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

I can now use a 3D printer and a laser cutting machine by myself, and I can prepare my own files, and this is a very useful thing in the final project, as I can do all the parts of the project myself without referring to the help of others

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

It was impressive for me during the printing experiments on the machines, the different products for each group, although the basic file and the conditions are the same for all.

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

One of the great things this week, my partner Islam and I made our first model on a laser cutting machine and a 3D printer, and it was a fun experience for me.
