Week 5- Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

Assignment:

This week's assignment is to design, simulate, and build a simple electronic device that performs two actions and is Integrated within an enclosure.

I was inspired by a video on the YouTube. https://youtu.be/d9weqTDubD8

First I try to make a small friend (robot) that can move with shiny eyes, Then it changes at the end.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

Software: We used Tinkercad to simulate the circuit before we use the real electronic components; To avoid any problems in the real circuit and avoid damage of the components.

Electronics components

  • Red LED Light and two green ( for design only)

  • Resistor

  • ON/Off switch

  • DC Motor

  • DC Power (9v)

  • Breadboard

  • jumper wires (per need)

  • crocodile wires

Link

Material:

  • Cardboard

  • Aristo & Ruler

  • Tap and glue

  • Pencil & Paper

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

I used TINKERCAD to simulate the circuit before I started to Build the circuit on a breadboard.

First: I try to draw the circuit I need in a paper as we taught in physics that's make me understand easily and know how to connect.

Second: I make the final circuit draw and calculate the resistor needed for the LED (showed in the third sketch picture.)

V=IR

7=(20*10^-3) R

R= 350 Ohm.

Then I used (LED light, Motor, ON/OFF switch, 9v power supply)

Then: I started wiring them:

  • The LED light's Cathode side is connected with a 350Ω resistor, and the Anode side is connected to the positive of the power supply. so they are connecting in series.

  • The Motor is connected also to the power supply's positive side, and the other side is connected to the negative side of the LED so they are connecting in parallel.

  • One side of the pushbutton is connected to the wire of the LED and the Motor, and the other side is connected to the power supply's negative side.

  • Finally: I connected them all to the 9v power supply.

Build the circuit in TINKERCAD

After simulation

First I draw a series connection

parallel connection but actually I use one resistor.

The circuit that I used

  • The Final circuit in TINKERCAD for the real one.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

checking the LED with 5V adaptor

  • I wired the LED light with its positive (white wire) to the positive of the power supply (red wire) and then the resistor to the negative of the LED (the green wire in the picture) as in the TINKEDCAD simulation with the resistor, so they are connecting in series.

(The resistor is connected to the cathode side to the green jumper of the red LED )

  • The motor (blue jumper) is connecting with the positive also of the supply (red jumper). The other wire of the motor (black wire) is connecting with the other side of the resistor, so the motor is parallel with the LED& resistor.

  • I wired the Switch in the same way in the TINKEDCAD simulation.

(the purple jumper of the Switch is connected to the side of the resistor and the motor, the yellow jumper (the other wire of the switch) is connected to the side of the power supply's negative)

  • So the circuit is closed.

  • I started to collect the component I need from my electronic kit.

Note: in this picture, I used the 5v adaptor on the first try, to try the led and the resistor then I used 9v adaptor at last to get more power for the motor and the led's light more clear.

  • I didn't know how to wire the circuit in parallel, so I opened the video tutorial it and found this and I understand how to wire it.

preparing the tools for fabrication.

cutting the parts of the body needed.

Draw the front part and make the LEDs describe it.

Green LED for the eyes.

Red LED for the nose.

Then make hole for the ON/OFF switch.

The electronic components to put the wires and the breadboard.

Inserting the LED and the front part to the other body.

The circuit needed & The real wiring.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

  • First as a challenges I try to make a moving little robot I stack in some points as when wiring the two led together preventing them from burning also how to make the material not heavy to make the motor move freely, That's was so funny I tried many things to make it, I changed some features on it for the assignment , but finally I make it for my self. I'm so proud to make a small kind of moving thing.

  • Second as a problem I found it in the connection of how to make it parallel, so I go back to the video tutorial Powering two components in parallel (Optimal!) and finally I did it.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

This assignment shows how to connect components optimally to prevent them from overheating or burning out, and how to assemble and organize components in an enclosure without shortening the circuiting or messing up the circuit.

My final project contains Motor, and a ON/OFF switch, I learnt how to connect them.

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?
