Week 3- Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

Assignment:

This week's assignment is to make a design of a pen & pencil holder on Fusion 360 software and prepare it for 3D Printing.

Why this idea?

My brother get admired of what I was doing these weeks, he told me to make next assignment for him.

I browsed google.com and Pinterest website to get inspired, Then I decided to make an elegant designed pen holder as in the picture.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

Software:

  • We 'll be using Fusion 360 in 3D designing to create more complex shapes.

  • We used Ultimaker Cura before in week 1 to slice a chosen model and generate the g-code required by the 3D printer. This time we'll be using the program for the same function but we'll upload our own created model.

Machines: 3D printer: Prusa i3 mk2

Material: PLA generic Black

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

  • The Design Process: I've used Fusion 360 software to create the designed model.

First: I sketched the body and thought of what features could use, I used extrude and loft features, also I could use revolve or also draw a 3D designed.

Let's go to the design steps.....

  • After opening Fusion 360, First Draw sketch (circle) in the x-y plan

  • Third draw a sketch in the upper surface of the base, then extrude it

  • Second use extrude feature for the sketch to make the base

  • After extruding we make the shell

  • Fourth we do a construct (offset plan), then draw a sketch.

  • After that we rotate the sketch by the angle needed.

  • After rotating we make extrude cut to remove the upper part of he shape.

  • We get the needed shape then lets move to the cone shape I the design.

  • After that we draw a circle in the upper surface of the base part. Then we offset a surface plan to draw the next bigger circle sketch

  • Then we create a loft to join the two different dimensional circle. select the first then the next sketch, then we modify a shell n the upper surface of the cone.

  • Finally modifying a shell we try to open areas in the shape to decrease the grams

  • from construct make an offset plan ten move it in the needed height then draw some rectangles

  • I extruded cut in he shape to get what I need.

  • Then Finally I changed its color using the Appearance menu.

  • Finally I save the file as mesh or (export stl file)

to import it in Cura software.

Preparing the design in Cura

  • Click file then open stl. file (of the design), change the parameter needed.

  • click slice to check he time and the grams.

  • Material: PLA

  • Profile: Draft - 0.2 mm

  • Infill: 10%

  • Support Placement: no

  • Adhesion: No (the surface area touching the plate is wide enough)

  • Time: 1h,30 min.

  • Grams: 11gm

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

  • I import the pen holder's design (stl.) file into Ultimaker Cura software. I set up my model in the software. Then I start adjusting the scale of the model and position it on the virtual printer bed. Then specify my printing preferences for the object. The last step would be exporting the G-Code for the 3D printer.

  • I save the file to the disk ( Memory card) and I put it in the 3D printer then click the control knob to access the Main Menu and choose my file name.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

  • challenges & problems

I face a problem in the lap that after 30 min during fabrication the PLA material tied together and the machine couldn't get the material to complete the design and the nozel move in air above the shape.

  • solution: Finally the Lab specialist help and we stop the fabrication and do it again. So be careful about the PLA materiel that be flexible to move.

Also at first I designed an earth cool pen holder, during the design I thought that it will exceed the limit time but I found it exciting so I continued the shape. When I exported it stl file to open in cura I found it took more than 5 hr. that exceed the limit time. I tried to scale it till become 3hr that also couldn't help .

Finally I decided to change the whole design, but I also found the same problem, I scaled it and made an opening areas to decrease the time.

  • solution: I asked my peer Hanaa about decreasing the time for fabrication, she told me to try to open areas in other parts. Finally after slicing it took the time needed exactly.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

  • This assignment covers some important points that will help me in the final project:

  1. Being able to use 3D modeling tools in Fusion 360.

  2. Exploring and utilizing Fusion 360's features to make a complex 3D model.

  • So I can use fusion 3D to create parts in my final project as the mechanism (check the project proposal)

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

  • I have learned a different ways to create a design, you can use sketch or you can do it 3D in fusion, also you prefer extrude or loft or other features could make your design, so any path could lead you to what you need.

  • I'll never forget to make sure that the thickness of the offset parts, more than the printer's nozel thickness (0.6), so that if you scaled your model down, you don't miss some parts in the printing fabrication, thanks for the specialist for clarifying this point.

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

I designed an earth cool shape in fusion and try the features in the tutorials, I changed its color and use an image of earth downloaded from internet using the Appearance menu, it looks interesting and also I found a video for this design references. It was so cool to try something else.
