Students’ social and emotional competencies in elementary school
Social and emotional competencies begin developing at home through early childhood experiences.
Elementary children are learning the important developmental task of understanding and discussing their emotions and thoughts. This awareness will help them continually stengthen their ability to regulate their emotions and focus their attention. Young children are also growing their abilities to understand different perspectives and show empathy for others.
In later elementary years, children build upon these competencies to begin forming a clearer sense of who they are, defining goals and plans, and navigating challenges more independently. Students are also starting to become more aware of different social norms as they build stronger friendships and bonds. They are developing their problem-solving strategies, learning how their actions can impact others, and beginning to understand how they can take actions to address bigger issues in their schools or communities.
Las competencias sociales y emocionales comienzan a desarrollarse en el hogar a través de las experiencias de la primera infancia.
Los niños de primaria están aprendiendo la importante tarea de desarrollo de comprender y discutir sus emociones y pensamientos. Esta conciencia les ayudará a fortalecer continuamente su capacidad para regular sus emociones y centrar su atención. Los niños pequeños también están desarrollando sus habilidades para comprender diferentes perspectivas y mostrar empatía por los demás.

Promoting students’ SEL in elementary school
Families are children’s first teachers and play a big role in elementary students’ lives. That is why it is especially important for guardians to partner closely with their child's school to inform SEL goals and plans that are responsive to their children’s unique strengths, needs, and cultural and linguistic background.
One thing that can be done is to read books that highlight SEL skills in action.
Another way to support your child with SEL is to model the appropriate and desired behaviors. Children learn by observing others and use this knowledge to guide their actions. Parents you can show your children how to identify their emotions and how to process them by sharing your experience with them.
Las familias son los primeros maestros de los niños y desempeñan un papel importante en la vida de los estudiantes de primaria. Es por eso que es especialmente importante que los tutores se asocien estrechamente con la escuela primaria de su estudiante para informar las metas y planes de SEL que respondan a las fortalezas, necesidades y antecedentes culturales y lingüísticos únicos de sus hijos.
