Financial Literacy Graduation Requirement
Through Montana FCS Programs
A graduation requirement to include 1/2 credit (meaning .5 credit or one semester) was added as a graduation requirement beginning with the 2026 graduating class. There are a number of existing courses (many of which are career and technical education) which can fill this requirement, including several Family and Consumer Sciences classes.

Montana Financial Literacy Course Content Summary shares the content considered important for a financial literacy course.
Recognized Financial Literacy Content, Resources, Courses, and Codes lists content in greater detail. vetted resources considered quality for reference, courses that are recognized to meet the graduation requirement and the codes to align to the enrollment of students so their meeting this requirement is captured on their transcripts. NOTE: If taught by a CTE teacher in a recognized CTE program, the enrollment earns State Vo Ed funding.
National Standards for Personal Financial Education are recognized national standards for personal finance when looking at a K-12 approach
AAFCS Per-PAC Personal and Family Finance is an nationally validated assessment which can lead to a certification to document a students content knowledge and skills. This aligns to the National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards including the area of study 2.0 Consumer and Family Resources and 3.0 Consumer Services, a direct tie to financial literacy.
FCS Course Suggestion #19258 Personal and Career Readiness is considered one of the two best alignments within FCS to the suggested content for financial literacy, aligned to the National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards, this course is an open for all four pathways at the foundational level. If this course is taught by a licensed FCS teacher in a recognized FCS program, it will earn State Vo Ed enrollment funding.
FCS Course Suggestion #19262 Consumer Education and Personal Finance is considered the second of two best FCS courses aligned to the suggested content for financial literacy. Also aligned to the National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards, this course is found at the elective level within the Human Services pathway. If this course is taught by a licensed FCS teacher in a recognized FCS program, it will earn State Vo Ed enrollment funding.
FCCLA Financial Fitness National Program offers real world and authentic activities and application of the Family and Consumer Sciences content through FCCLA Chapters. Aligned with the National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards, this resource includes best practices in developing financial literacy.
FCCLA Power of One National Program offers practice in goal setting to address goals identified by the student to address real world problems and build skills to last a lifetime. Built upon the application of the Family and Consumer Sciences content to guide decisions which are put into action. Aligned with the National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards, this resource includes best practices in developing financial literacy through FCS programs with FCCLA Chapters.
FCCLA Career Connections National Program offers real world and authentic activities and application of the Family and Consumer Sciences content when looking at career development, work life balance and achieving life goals. Aligned with the National Family and Consumer Sciences Standards, this resource includes best practices in developing financial literacy through FCS programs with FCCLA Chapters.

Reality Works Childcare Experience Program
Here is a direct link to the new Childcare Experience Program which simulates a childcare center in your classroom. The kit has four babies with support equipment to make the experience as real life as possible. Smaller doll can be used for Infant/Toddler CPR and the larger for a chocking simulation. These are not realtime babies, but especially designed for this experience.
