Project Based Learning
Summer Lunch Buddies
After a visit to our local Greer Soup Kitchen with the director Martha Bennett, the students in 5th grade Challenge began exploring the possibility of helping our school community by fundraising funds for the "Summer Lunch Buddies" program. We decided in our time beyond Challenge, we would arrive early to school and sell items projected by small groups. Each month, a group of four students plan items to sell to other students before school. They plan the items, figure out the cost, and projected profit. This is an authentic progressing of "real world" nonprofits. Mrs. Bennett and the Board of Daily Bread Ministries began feeding children at Chandler Creek in the summer two years ago. Meals are delivered to 150-175 children from Chandler Creek and this past summer Woodland was included. Mrs. Bennett and her volunteers taught us many things about the work of a nonprofit during our visit. The acutual experience of raising funds for a nonprofit is something that truly comes from the heart. Fifth graders are SHINING in this area at Chandler Creek. The anticipation of each groups' turn has been a motivational experience for each group. We plan to present our check to support Summer Lunch Buddies at the end of the school year. Also, the fifth graders will have the opportunity to deliver meals with their parents to the Greer community. If you would like to donate to our yearlong effort, please contact Mrs. Simmons at Chandler Creek.
Younger students anticipating what the groups will have for sale. The use of communication skills to make sure each customer gets exactly what they want! Outsanding parental support from our Chandler Creek parents. Creative minds learning at their best are experiences planting seeds for young minds and hearts.
Younger students buying marshmallow snowmen for friends....and sharing. Fifth graders using techniques to sell to the student body. Below.....a mass of snowmen made my the students at school during their recess and late afternoon.
Planning and Presenting
Fifth graders research information about the development of the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building while gaining an understanding of the influence of our national symbols and landmarks on the American Culture. Digital learning in action! Students then present a "tableau" portraying the grand openings of such historic events.
Problem Based Learning
"Summer Lunch Buddies"
Our 5th grade Challenge students are using problem solving and decision making strategies skills this year to complete an authentic learning project. We are gaining knowledge about the function of a nonprofit organization. After a visit to the Greer Soup Kitchen and conducting interviews there, students are learning about food insecurity in American families. Through this experience students are planning effective uses for student fundraisers before or after school. Proceeds of our fundraisers will benefit Chandler's Creek summer feeding program called, "Summer Lunch Buddies" which is sponsored by Daily Bread Ministries. This organization feeds 100-160 hot meals to our students three times a week during the summer. Students will gain a sense of appreciation for this invaluable resource in our community. Here are pictures of our learning experience with more to come throughout the year.
Researching in 5th Grade Challenge
Students are researching the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Models will then be built of this iconic landmark. Students interact with one another through collaborative conversations to express their views when completing class projects.

"Bronco Buster" by Frederic Remington
A true Remington bronze statue visited us at Chandler Creek Elementary. "Bronco Buster" portrays a rugged Western frontier, cowboy character. It was the first and remains the most popular of all of Remington's sculptures. Great appreciation goes to Mrs. Ralph Johnson for allowing Mrs. Simmons to borrow this beautiful bronze statue.
"A Remington"
Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor and writer who specialized in depictions of the American Old West. We learned about his style of art and also had a "Remington Bronze" to visit our class. We hope you enjoy our slideshows of Remington.
Viewpoints
Students in fifth grade Challenge will look at America through a variety of "Viewpoints". As students progress through their Social Studies curriculum in their homerooms, we will build upon this knowledge in Challenge. The American way of life throughout history will be viewed through music, dance, and artwork of various kinds. Students will understand that not only did the facts of history occur, but the history made a significant impact on people and their way of life.
Winslow Homer
Winslow Homer was an American landscape painter of the 19th century. Fifth grade Challenge students analyzed his painting, Veteran in a New Field, and wrote about the emotions of a Civil War soldier. We looked at the viewpoint of this soldier as he stood in his field of wheat after returning home in comparison to a battlefield in Gettysburg. Through his emotions, students created a monologue for the soldier.

Introductory Activites in Fifth Grade Challenge
2018-2019
We had a great first week. Our activites included our favorite pop song, "You Can Have It All", sharing our hopes and dreams and painting a Chinese haiku written by the students. Enjoy our pictures!
This begins archived information and pictures from 2017-2018 .
Norman Rockwell
Norman Rockwell was an iconic artist with drawings and painting seen across America. Students had to depict an issue from today's society, just as Rockwell did many times. This issue is called "Communication" by JP Hernandez.
Modern Art
Fifth grade Challenge students have examined the unique styles of pop artist Andy Warhol and abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock. Students are discovering how the same events in history are depicted in totally different ways by a variety of artists. Below, students are making an abstract painting using the techniques of Pollock. Also, students are modeling Warhol's style by doing repetitive drawings of commons objects.
During the month of January, we are learning about American culture during the Depression Era by studying jazz performers and artists. Students are learning new presentation websites to showcase their research. Also, we are continuing with "Hands-on Equations". This district program is preparing us for algebraic equations.
As we are going deeper into "Hands-on Equations", students are finding that making designs with our materials makes the learning interesting!
How do we spread Christmas spirit on our last day before the holidays? We visit the K-5 classes and read special, Christmas stories. The result....we learn that younger children are inquisitive and are mesmerized by "the big kids". What a joyous time for all!!!
"Liberty Enlightening the World"
In 5th grade Challenge, we are looking at the importance of the an American icon, "The Statue of Liberty". Students are researching the symbolism of this statue designed by Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi. Not only is it a symbolic gesture from the French showing freedom and democracy. It has welcomed many immigrants into the United States.
Below is a fun activity called, "Freeze Statue". Students enjoyed playing this game outside after working hard on research.
A Remington Comes to Chandler Creek
In fifth grade Challenge, we analyzed the artwork of Frederic Remington. His art influenced our perception of the "Wild West". We compared our view of the "Wild West" with Remington's view. Looking at the life of such a famous painter, sculptor, illustrator and writer who was talented at depicting the old west allows us to learn another viewpoint of history.
"The Bronco Buster"
An appreciation goes to Ralph and Harriet Johnson of Greer for sharing their Remington sculpture with us at Chandler Creek Elementary.
"Soldier in a New Field" Artist Homer Elllis
Students in fifth grade Challenge examined the viewpoint of this Civil War soldier through the eyes of artist Homer Ellis. Ellis expressed his viewpoint of the times well. We compared this "new" field to the Gettysburg field...after the battle. Monologues express the soldier's emotions and thoughts as he returns home. Below are the monolgues and more will be added as students complete the writings.
