COURSE DESCRIPTION:   While the curricular content is similar in CP and Honors level world language courses, the proficiency level toward which students are consistently expected to work differs. At the honors level, unit plans, lesson design, instructional delivery, and performance assessments provide evidence that, at minimum, students are expected to work at the Intermediate Low or Intermediate Mid  level of proficiency across all Modes of Communication more than 50% of the time throughout the course.

Examples of honors enrichment in world language instruction include: Reading and research-based writing assignments that extend and expand on course content; student-driven projects that apply course curriculum to real-world situations; and investigate products and practices to show understanding of cultural perspectives. Honors enrichment opportunities align with the South Carolina Standard for World Language Proficiency and The Profile of the SC Graduate.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:  After successfully acquiring the knowledge presented in the class by way of the activities in and out of class, each student will be able to demonstrate success in the four areas of the language:  speaking, listening, reading and writing.  The teacher is insuring that the South Carolina Foreign Language Learning Standards are being met.

SOUTH CAROLINA STANDARD FOR WORLD LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Every learner will use a world language, other than English, to engage in meaningful, intercultural communication, understand and interpret the spoken and written language, and present information, concepts and ideas in local and global communities. Through learning another language, they will gain an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures and compare the language and cultures learned with their own.

CORE PERFORMANCE COMPETENCIES-elements that comprise the standard for world language proficiency.  There are two types of competencies:  language and intercultural.

 Language Competencies

1. Interpretive Listening (IL) and Reading (IR): I can interpret information, concepts, and ideas from a variety of culturally authentic sources on  a variety of topics.

2. Interpersonal Communication (IC): I can exchange information, concepts, and ideas with a variety of speakers or readers on a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate context.

3. Presentational Speaking (PS) and Writing (PW): I can present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety  of topics in a culturally appropriate context.

 Intercultural Competencies

4. Investigation of Cultural Products and Practices (CPP): I can use my language skills to investigate the world beyond my immediate environment.

5. Understanding of Cultural Perspectives (CP): I can use my language skills to recognize and understand others’ ways of thinking as well as my own.

6. Participation in Cultural Interaction (CIA):  I can use my language skills and cultural understanding to interact in a cultural context other than my own.

Passes Out of My Class-It is best for students to go places between classes.  However, if necessary, the student may leave the class to use the rest room, water fountain, etc. He/she must ask Sra. Stegall in Spanish. If student is wanting to leave class at an inopportune time or too often, Sra. Stegall will talk privately to student in order to find out if there is a problem or situation that causes the student to leave the class often. Of course, if there is a medical issue, the student needs to make sure that Sra. Gabby is aware of the situation and accommodations will be allowed.
