Dear Parents,

Welcome to STEAM Lab! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/ Architecture, and Mathematics. In this interdisciplinary class, students will explore how the content knowledge they learn in all of their core classes is used to solve real life problems. They will see how STEAM technology affect their lives and how they can use science, technology, and entrepreneurship to better the world around them.

What is project based learning?

PBL is a teaching method in which students learn content and skill sets by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

In accordance with the PBL method, students will work mostly in teams to complete multi-step projects. This will teach students to work on their time management and group working skills. Most projects will include: research time, building or drawing their solutions, testking their products, presenting their work to their peers, and thoughtfully reviewing their work .

Through these assignments, students will dable with a a variety of STEAM fields such as introductions to coding, website design, marketing, entrepreneurship, and basic architectural programs.

Grade Themes

Pairing with the content in their Science and Social Studies classes, each grade will explore STEAM through a slightly different lens:

6th Grade: How has the advancement of STEAM technology affected different civilizations throughout the ages and how can I see STEAM technology in our lives at Woodmont Middle and the City of Greenville?

7th Grade: How is STEAM used by Nations around the world to help the UN achieve their 17 Sustainable Development Goals?

8th Grade: How can I use STEAM to better my life, the community of Woodmont Middle, and the City of Greenville?

Supplies

In this class we will use mostly recyclable materials. As a result, I kindly ask for students to bring in recyclable kitchen packaging such as cereal boxes, cans, plastic yogurt cups, unused straws, mason jars and other boxes. This way students will have a larger variety of supplies to choose from.

In addition to these household materials, students are also asked to bring in "sticky stuff" aka: hot glue, tape, and glue sticks. I will provide allotted amounts of these sticky items per project, but if a student brings in their own they can use as much of their own glue or tape as they wish.

I am so excited to teach your children and inspire them to use their creativity, think out of the box, become more confident with technology, and begin a love for STEAM.
