Cultural Venues and Creative Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning

Karen Hosack Janes

Dr Karen Hosack Janes is an Affiliate Lecturer in Education at Oxford Brookes University. Formerly Head of Art in a secondary school, and then Head of Schools at the National Gallery, London, she is now an education consultant specialising in creative pedagogies. Her publications include Using the Visual Arts for Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning: Imaginative ideas for the primary school (Routledge) and a number of books on art for children (Raintree and Heinemann Library). The findings of her doctoral research (available on the University of Oxford Research Archive) suggest that too much emphasis on the teaching and practising of technique is often at the expense of enabling creative opportunities for pupils and offering high cognitive challenge. In this conference presentation she discusses the guiding principles behind a National Gallery partnership programme that she developed along with five universities and five regional museums. The presentation highlights how the partnership with Oxford Brookes University has evolved.
