Los Tuxtlas Water Research: REU

Project goals:

Personal goals: How water chemistry works, controls on water chemistry in Los Tuxtlas, personal research experience

Research goals: forest vs. human impact on water in TVF (need access permission), poster presentation, interesting data for NSF proposal, relate to soil work by Amy, water sample analyses, literature review development

To do before spring break:

- seek permission from Bioreserve

- soil/water training

- lit review/background (continuing)

- get soil observations from Amy

Activities for 5/2 (meet with Kitty):

Is the Young approach doable in the Vaughan chronosequence?

How do we pick sites in the field?

Is the hydrologic development at COTM similar to hot/dry desert (Mohave) or wet/basaltic site (Hawaii)?

Which tools for shallow soils?

- Meet again 5/6, noon: follow-up from meeting with Kitty, GIS layers

Activities for 4/29:

Dry side vs. wet side Hawaii; soil development on comparable slopes

need to check in on wind-blown soils with Kitty

look for named flows on COTM map

Read Ch3 in Vaughan, Young

Activities for 4/22:

read ch. 2 from Vaughan diss.

L: talk w/ field camp re: 2 Jul site selection visit

for future: compile ages and locations from Table 1 from Putirka et al., if possible?

Activities for 4/18:

mt w/ K re: D's collaboration

read Putirka et al.

Activities for 4/8:

Sa: meet with Kitty about COTM sampling redirect

L: send ref list; S&S: get access from list, send out

Activities for 4/1:

Sh: find camera, dang nabbit!

Find pink book from Kitty

read ArVi08

Activities for 3/18:

read Espindola et al. (2009)

check in with Amy, re: missing A horizon, structure decisions

Activities for 3/11:

SG: check on water analyses timing with Kitty, check REU dates, send soil text to LB

LB: collect/scan Amy's sample stuff, transcribe Shannon's water records from field book, soil text from Amy(?)

all: check summer travel dates

Activities for 2/25:

read USGS guidelines for sampling, schedule meeting with Amy

get soil observations from Amy

Activities for 2/14:

Lohse and Dietrich paper (dropbox)

(Sh: contact approach for Reserve)

Activities for 2/4:

(Sh: contact approach for Reserve)

Activities for 1/31:

Develop strong list of prioritized project goals.

Read two papers:

Scan & send Gibbs

Los Tuxtlas water chem paper (SG will send)

Write short summaries of key points from the 2 papers, bring to meeting to discuss.

Activities for 1/24 (until revised):

Pick new meeting day/time

Read 2 "papers"

1) Gold paper from Amy J. or Garrels and Mackenzie (1967)
