Expectations and Procedures of our Classroom

All jobs have expectations or rules. They also have procedures (how they want things done). Since school is essentially a job for you, it makes sense that we have expectations and procedures. Different teachers (managers) have different needs, so they have different ways of doing things. It will be the same in "the real world," so this is good practice. This page explains my expectations and procedures. You can consider this page your "employee handbook." In addition, the videos contain memes, which are sarcastic by nature. They are meant to spice up a fairly boring (but important) topic. Please do not take them too seriously. You can click "play" on the video and then make it full size.

These are your responsibility to know. The better you understand this information, the easier it will be for you over the next few years. Take time early on to look through this information and review it when you have questions. We will practice in class and review, but you should take time to utilize this resource.

Here are my basic rules.

Classroom Orientation

If you are caught with your cell phones outside of approved guidelines, I will take it until the end of the day. If you are caught with it a 2nd time, you must have a parent or guardian pick it up.

Here are the details on everything you need to know to be successful in my class

Being Prepared.mp4

Being Prepared

      • planner
      • binder (1 inch is fine)
      • (with 5 dividers)
      • paper source
      • free reading book
      • pen (blue or black) or pencil
      • “fun” colored pen
      • dry erase marker
      • earbuds
      • login info
      • notecards
      • name “tag” (I'll explain this)

Here is your supply list

There are other websites we will use for skill building (such as noredink.com). You are expected to keep track of your logins. Here's a tip- if one of the websites offers you the option to "sign up with Google," take it! Then you won't have to remember anything!

  • This is your information about staying organized. Much of this is covered in class.
  • Notes
    • I no longer put daily plans on Google Classroom- the time to effectiveness ratio was too low. Students should rely on their planners.
    • There are days the text messages don't go out (meetings, lots of students after school, etc.). Again, students should rely on their planners.

Being in class (bears and tardies)

Bears will be handed out in class

  • Makeup Work Video
    • watch video
    • List steps to acquire makeup work

*write absent # of days on top of first page (i.e. absent 1 day). Sorry, that info didn't make the video!

**To reflect our 1:1 ability (and to save paper), I will be linking the agenda I post in class to Google Classroom. If you look on the left hand side, you should see a link for agenda. I can help you. You will use your laptop to access that. It is the exact same thing I would have printed. You will still sign and date the makeup work binder (there will be a paper in there for this purpose). Do not sign it if you didn't look at the posted agenda.

  • Formatting your paper and correcting mistakes videos (These go together)
    • Watch video
    • Take notes
      • The style is up to you

Corrections Video

late work videos 1 and 2 (sorry, I was too cheap to pay for a longer video!)

late work policy addition.mp4
  • Ouch- late work. Just do your work on time and this is much easier!
  • Late work is not accepted for credit out of the grace period (next day for 7th grade and 1st semester 8th grade and same day for 2nd semester 8th grade and all high school classes)

Changes

1. When a student does not have an assignment finished, they are expected to fill out a yellow sheet. This is to communicate with the student's family that an assignment is missing. It is also to help the student plan for how to fix their missing assignment. If a parent is seeing Mi in the gradebook, but not signing yellow sheets, you may want to talk to your student about this.

2. We no longer have study tables. If a student has missing work, they are expected to report to my room directly after 8th hour (3:30?) and they will stay until 4:00 or when the assignment is done. If they are already scheduled to be with another teacher, they must communicate this with me before they are late. Failure to do this will result in a zero, unless they use their LWC.

3. Emergencies happen and shall be treated as such. Students are expected to communicate this need as early as possible. An email the night before is best, but a conversation or a note before school is also satisfactory.

Getting Help

  • Really, getting help is as simple as raising your hand. However, I realize some of you are apprehensive about things like that (I know I was!), so here's a video that gives you options.
  • Don't forget- you don't have to be assigned to come in after school or during seminar. You can CHOOSE to help yourself be successful.

Notes:

1. Guided studies is now called seminar (sorry- it was changed after I made the video). AND now it is called Bear's Den. It is a bit different this year, but you are still able to see me to get a pass.

2. You must see me to be on my list during Bear's Den! Randomly showing up will not work, as I will have various activities going on and there may not be room for you (my Bear's Den is huge).

Bell ringers/Starting class

  • This is information about starting class.
  • Notes
    • Even when CHOOSING seats, you need to be ready to start
  • Here is everything (well, kind of) you need to know about grading and JMC, including ways to improve your grade
    • I have an entire page on my website that explains JMC codes, specific to how I use them.

Notes:

1. Due to corrections, I'm technically grading and entering assignments 2 times. Sorry- gets a bit slow!

2. If your grade is subpar, please see the format video. It has more information about corrections.

3. This video does give a few tips on how to fix a grade.

  • Remember, grades are a reflection of learning. If a student is struggling, they should be working with their teacher.
  • Turning in missing work (Mi is the basics of what you will see in JMC) is only allowed within the late work or makeup work policy, unless there are special circumstances (habitual laziness or disorganization do not count).
