I am ready for anything through the strength of the one who lives within me.
- Paul, Philippians 4:13
As followers of Jesus, understanding confidence can be tricky. The New Testament instructs us to be humble, consider others as better than ourselves and not trust in our own strength. On the other hand, Scripture also tells us to be strong and courageous, and to be confident even in the face of crisis. To further complicate things, we are surrounded by a culture that values swagger, bravado and the attitude that we can accomplish anything we put our minds to.
How do we reconcile this tension? I believe the key is to reflect on the source of our confidence. In a world pursuing self-confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance, how do we live in the power of Christ and dependence on the Holy Spirit in a healthy way? Let’s pause to imagine what it might look like if we were to invite God to ‘paint confidence’ onto our canvas...
In moments when we face a difficult conversation with a family member, our Christ-confidence gives us the courage to move forward.
During days when we struggle with feelings of doubt or insecurity, our Christ-esteem reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
When we feel overwhelmed with all that our week holds, our Christ- reliance brings assurance that His strength and stamina will sustain us.
Let’s choose today to give God space to bring about this beautiful transformation in our lives, becoming more and more confident in the One who is the source of our abilities, wisdom and strength.
