Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;
teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.
- Solomon, Proverbs 9:9
My children are always exploring and asking me many questions. I love watching them experience the joy of discovering new things about God, the world He created and the life He desires for them.
Somewhere along the way, many of us lose our ability to be curious and open-minded like a child. We become self-sufficient experts, and our pride robs us of the chance to learn and grow. Many of us have come to believe that asking for advice reveals incompetence, asking for feedback reveals insecurity, and asking for help reveals weakness.
Solomon reminds us that wisdom does not necessarily increase with age or experience. God grants wisdom to those who have a humble and teachable spirit. Good teachers and mentors look for people with those qualities. People will give us honest feedback when we welcome it. In my own life, God has taught me many things through people who have gone before me, people who have walked a different path than me, and people who are walking alongside me.
Who do you look to for advice, feedback and help? Who has God placed in your life who challenges your perspective? It can be uncomfortable to have someone point out a blindspot or challenge our perspective, but if we all stayed curious, humble and teachable, we would grow wiser and experience more of who God is and the wonderful things He desires for our lives.
