Chapter 21

I Don't Feel Like Holding Hands Right Now

Tuesday, March 23

Family Discussion:

Sometimes a character remembers something from the past. The author has the character reflect on that memory at just the right moment. Think about Rafter and how he remembers his grandpa's words at just the right moment to help him come to an Aha!Moment. Those Words of the Wiser may not change things completely when they are first shared, but sometimes the memory of them is carried with the character to help them out later. How did this life lesson help Rafter? Why was it important that he remember it at this moment? How did this change things?

Chapter 22

Do You Feel It?

Wednesday, March 24

Family Discussion:

Reread the next to last chapter on page 217.

"We'd done it. Three kids without real powers had done the impossible-- we'd saved the day!"

We all can make a difference in one way or another. How can you (or do you) make a difference in someone's life? How do you make their day? Remember kindness matters- it doesn't have to be a crazy battle for you to save the day.

Authors use descriptive language to help readers create movies in their mind. On page 220, the author give a a description of October Jones. Can you make a mind movie? Perhaps you and your family members could each draw a picture of what you imagine.

At the end of the chapter is a contrast and contradiction to the picture you drew. Explain what that contrast and contradiction is.

Family Discussion:

At the end of the chapter, Rafter reflects on his grandpa's words, "It's not your power that makes you super. It's what you do with that power." Rafter knows there is one thing he has to do...

Chapter 26

Family Discussion:

Authors often don't directly tell the reader what is going on. The reader must take what is in the book along with what they already know (which could be from their lives or from earlier in the story) in order to read between the lines and understand what the author is saying. Talk with your family. What did Rafter do? How might this change things?

Chapter 27

Don't Think This Is Over

Friday, March 26

Family Discussion:

Even though things might turn out the way you would hope, you can still find success. Rafter could be down and discouraged at the end of the chapter, but he states that he feels "almost super." Why does he say this? What does he mean?

Can you think of a time that things didn't turn out the way you had hoped, but there actually was a silver lining? Perhaps you felt better than expected?

Chapter 28

You Can't Just Ignore the Laws of Mathematics

Friday, March 26

Family Discussion:

Sometimes we misjudge people. Sometimes we misread situations. Rafter, Bailey, and Juanita had to work hard to get their families to agree to a truce. Do you think the families truly believe the fact that neither is a super villain? Why or why not? What evidence from the story leads you to your decision?

Chapter 29

No One Answered

Monday, March 29

Family Discussion:

When finishing a book, readers should ask themselves what they can take away from what they have read. Sometimes readers will have just enjoyed the book. Maybe they will have learned how to do something new. Maybe they will walk away with a lesson that has touched their heart and will change how they approach life.

What did you take away from this story? How might you change what you do in your life?
