Chapter 13

It's Been a Rough Week

Monday, March 15

Family Discussion:

Think about the title of this chapter. Why do you think the author chose this title? To which characters do you think it applies? Why?

What surprised you most in this chapter? Was there anything that was truly a shock, or an eye opener?

Chapter 14

That's Not a Surprise, That's a Kick in the Teeth

Monday, March 15

Chapter 14 Almost Super.mp4

Family Discussion:

The title to this chapter shows a contrast and contradiction in the title. The boys' parents say they have a surprise. Usually when we think of a surprise, we think of something exciting and good. A "kick in the teeth" implies something horrible and painful.

  • Why do you think the author gave chapter 14 this title?

Benny and Rafter have a few Aha! Moments in this chapter. This is where the character finally figures out or realizes something.

  • What do the boys realize?

  • How does this affect each of them?

  • How do you think this might change things in the story? What evidence do you have?

Chapter 15

I've Always Wanted to Try Broccoli

Tuesday, March 16

Family Discussion:

Rafter describes his grandfather's ranch and the sprawling space beneath the mountain. It might remind some of the Bat Cave. Superheroes often have a cool lair with a lot of high tech equipment... although I don't know how many you get to through an outhouse! What kind of lair would your superhero family have??

Reread pages 165 - 166. Rafter goes through a series of Aha! Moments where he comes to realize a few things. This appears to make a change in his character. How do you see him changing? How do you think this will change things in the story?

EY Friends:

Design your own super hero lair! Create a superhero lair and provide a detailed written description. You may work with your family, a friend, or on your own! Let's see what you can come up with.

Some ideas to consider:

  • If you like to build your own lair that you can actually hide out in, take a picture and put it in a Google Slide or Doc along with your description.

  • Are you a Lego fan? Build a Lego lair! Take a picture and put it in a Google Slide or Doc along with your written description.

  • Perhaps you love to draw, paint, or sculpt? Let the artist to you go to work. Bring in your creation and description or take a picture and put it in a Google Slide or Doc along with your written description.

Be creative! Maybe you like to design on the computer or you have a totally different idea! Share your idea with Mrs. Stover by sharing or emailing jstover@yssd.org. If it is something you want to bring in to display, let me know!

Chapter 16

I Don't Think That's Even Correct Grammar

Wednesday, March 17

Chapter 16 by Mrs. King.mp4

Family Discussion:

This chapter is packed full of unanswered questions. What do you and your family think about the following:

  • Who is Oscar J.? Is he a Johnson? Why did he place that phone call?

  • Is it important that 2.7 sticks of dynamite can fit in a glove box? Why would you have 2.7 sticks?

  • Why does the word dentist stick out in Rafter's mind?

  • Did the Johnsons really send that text? What does it mean?

  • What is that sound? What about that streak of lightning???

So much to discover!! We'd best read on!

Chapter 17

To the Mitsubishi!

Chapter 17- To the Mitsubishi.webm

Family Discussion:

At the beginning of the chapter, the Baileys begin to realize that something is not right. When a character realizes something , we call this an Aha! Moment.

  • What do the Baileys realize?

  • How might this change things?

What do you think Rafter is up to? Why might he want to meet with Juanita?
