Family Discussion:

Words of the Wiser

We often learn things from others as we try to confront challenges in life. Often, in stories, older and wiser characters share their wisdom. On pages 22 - 26, Grandpa has a heart to heart with the boys. What lessons do you think they learn? Is there something that you can take away and apply to your life?

East York Friends

These chapters are full of contrasts and contradictions. A contrast and contradiction is not ony when a character acts differently than we might expect that character to act, but also when things are different than we would expect in our daily lives.

Super powers are definitely something we don't expect people to have, but these super powers are crazy! Just from chapters 1 and 2, list as many characters and their super powers as you can. Your name will be entered to win a prize at the end of the week!

Place your entry here! We will draw names on our next spirit day: Tuesday, March 9 Wear a Superhero T-shirt or Sweatshirt Day.

Chapter 3

Drink Your Goat's Milk

Wednesday, March 3

Family Discussion:

Words have their own power. At the end of chapter 2, Rafter over hears his dad say worthless powers. As the family eats breakfast, his dad mentions interesting powers, but Rafter hangs on to the negative worthless powers he heard in chapter 2.

Talk with your family about the power of words and how you can affect others' feelings and how they might affect you.

Chapter 4

If He Offers Candy, Don't Take It

Wednesday, March 3

Family Discussion:

Rafter has difficulty with his friend Mike because Mike talks negatively about superheroes. Again, here we see the power of words and not in a good way. Think about the following:

  • Could you be sharing something that might hurt someone's feelings without knowing it?

  • Is everyone that belongs to a certain group exactly the same? Can we give the same traits to everyone?

  • How can we change our thinking and see the individual traits of others?

Chapter 5

In the Bag, Benny. In the Bag.

Thursday, March 4

Family Discussion:

Wow! That was some battle. How do you feel about the outcome of the diamond splitting into itty bitty pieces?? Did the family beat the Johnsons? What do you think?

At the end of Chapter 5, Rafter tells Benny that they are going to go "on the offensive."

  • What does that mean?

  • What do you think Rafter's plan is?

  • Do you think it is wise to go on the offensive? Why or why not?
