Volunteer/Community Service is a wonderful way for high school students to offer their personal time to assist others within their school and/or community.
Volunteer/Community Service is NOT required to graduate. It IS however, required among the criteria for earning any of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarships.
Hours can be earned through a variety of ways but must be done free of financial gain and cannot be done as a replacement for a paid position. On this page will be listings of volunteer/community service opportunities and contact information. This list does not reflect the ONLY services that can be done, but intends to offer a list of those individuals, schools, and organizations that are in search of volunteer students.
Make sure you print the service record form and turn it in to Ms. Echemendia in A-108.

YREADS at Peace River Elementary
Looking for an opportunity to make a difference and use your school volunteer hours? Consider becoming a Volunteer Mentor with YMCA Reads! an afterschool reading program at Peace River Elementary in Port Charlotte. We are preparing to launch programming on Tuesday, September 3, and need your help.
Our afterschool reading and mentoring program serves at-risk students in Kindergarten through 4th grade every Monday through Thursday afternoon from 3:15-5:15 pm.
We are looking for Volunteer Mentors to be paired with groups of 1-3 students during the 2025-26 school year. Mentors typically volunteer for 1-2 sessions per week and work with the same students (either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday). Mentors do not need prior teaching experience, but they must complete an application, undergo a background check, and submit additional forms through the Y. This process is free.
Once all forms are uploaded and the background check is cleared, the Site Coordinator will contact you to schedule a time to complete the volunteer training. If you have volunteered in past years, your training will be shorter in length and primarily a refresher course, which will include any program changes that may have occurred.
We would love to have you join (or rejoin) YMCA Reads! this year. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Site Coordinator Kate Upton with the subject “Volunteer,” and she will send you the following steps, including this year’s application and the link to sign up for a training. kupton@ymcaswfl.org
