Participation in Extracurricular Activities


Activities sponsored by Yorktown High School are an integral part of the school’s program.  Participating students must be sensitive to the need to maintain the school’s high standards and reputation.

Students participating in extracurricular activities and athletics MUST remain academically eligible. The advisors and coaches of the extracurricular activity will review the policy with their students.  Student academic performance will be monitored via the review of all progress reports and report cards during the school year.

The aeronautics club encourages learning about Drones and practical applications through builds and competitions. 

ACC is for students who would like to explore computer coding and algorithms at a deeper level.

American Computer Science League

 

The Alliance for Broad Diversity is a safe space where students can meet and support each other as they explore issues of race, ethnicity and gender. It is open to all students regardless of your demographic makeup. 

The goal of the group is to promote awareness of the concept of human rights, to help specific political prisoners who are denied fundamental human rights and to promote solutions to specific human rights abuses. 

Students can work on independent art projects in the YHS Art Suite.  Students hang out, create art, help each other learn new techniques and  have fun! 

Book Club

  

The chess club is an activity that is open to all students interested in the game of chess.  Students should already know the basic moves of the game.  Modern chess openings and sound strategies of the game will be reviewed.  Students will then implement these lessons by playing against each other.  At the end of each year there is a tournament. 

Circle of Friends is a club that reaches out to our Skills and Achievement students with autism and other disabilities and involves them in a full experience of socializing with their high school peers.

The Dance Company consists of numerous dancers who work together to produce an annual performance.  

Students pick a new topic for debate each week, write a resolution to be debated on that topic, then prepare to debate in teams. 

Drama club is an open club for any students interested in acting, drama, or musical theatre. We will participate in various theatrical activities, such as improvisation, character development, confidence, public speaking, scene work, working with peers, and many other activities. All are welcome.

The students in this club will experience and develop such skills as: auditioning, rehearsing, scene blocking, character interpretation and development, acting, critiquing themselves and their fellow actors, improvisation and working with props, scenery and costumes, that will culminate in participating in a drama production. 

GIVE

 

Interested in Engineering? Collaborate on fun and creative projects to benefit our district and community while gaining experience for college. 

The environmental club is open to all students interested in the environment.  Students become aware of what is going on in school, the community, and the region regarding environmental issues. 

Envirothon is a series of hands-on contests in which teams of high school students complete to solve environmental problems.  

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is the largest career student business organization in the world.  The FBLA helps over 230,000 members worldwide prepare for careers in business. 

"Finding Our Own Different Diets" Grow, prepare and share delicious, nutritious food together utilizing school-garden grown food.

 If you're interested in helping others, smashing things, and getting volunteer hours for it, join the Fuller Center Club and help rebuild houses for those in need.

Love video games? Gamers of all levels and experience are invited to join us! 

Global Solutions is a club in which students band together to help countries that are in need of necessary goods during this difficult time. 

The GSA club provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation, and work to end discrimination based on sexual orientation. 

The history club meets every other week.

Learn how to knit or crochet! No experience necessary. We work together and donate our blankets and other items to animal organizations.

Key Club is a service program for high school students.  The members are given opportunities to volunteer for local and national organizations.

For any student interested in learning what it means to be involved in law enforcement. Potential trips include visits to a courthouse, police academy and police station. Guest speakers from the FBI, ATF, Bomb Squad, K-9 Dog Handlers, YPD Chief of Police, Local Town Judges and the Aviation Unit with a helicopter landing.  

We work to reduce stigma at YHS in regards to mental health. We will talk about ways to make mental health more approachable. The students talk about strategies they use to take care of themselves and support their friends, classmates and loved ones! We are curating a space where these students can empower each other. It is a way for students to build confidence, compassion, skills and knowledge as well as friendships. Students in the Yorktown Branch will also meet with the JCK Foundation weekly.

The Yorktown Math Team participates in math competitions across Westchester and Putnam counties.  

The Math Honor Society is for Junior and Seniors. As a group we will meet to discuss opportunities for the math students to participate in math-related events and interact with each other. 

This is a community service organization designed to help those less fortunate.  Members collect and distribute clothing and food to the homeless in New York City.

The students in this club will experience and develop such skills as: auditioning, rehearsing, scene blocking, character interpretation and development, acting, solo and ensemble singing, movement and dance techniques, critiquing themselves and their fellow actors, improvisation and working with props, scenery and costumes, that will culminate in participating in a musical production.

The Next Level Husker Discovery Ambassador Program is a leadership program dedicated to graduates of the Husker Discovery program in grades 9-12.  Students will work as ambassadors to promote the ideals of Husker Discovery.  Connection is the foundation of empathy so students will work together to foster involvement and inclusion amongst their peers and strive to embody the morals of the Yorktown Central School District.  This program aims to create a culture in which student mentors encourage optimism and teach skills to produce a stable, productive, and balanced well-being. 

Pets and Wildlife for Students - PAWS is a club where Yorktown High School students can meet to learn about exotic and domesticated animals and how to help them. 

Philosophy Club

Philosophy Club seeks to encourage critical and diverse thinking through intellectual and lighthearted conversations about philosophy throughout the course of human history.  

Students explore the history and significance of notable musicians, actors, and public figures.  They also discuss conspiracy theories regarding the deaths of people like Tupak, Princess Diana and President Kennedy.

The Red Cross Club is an organization where students will work collaboratively to better the community. 

The Robotics Club teaches students about engineering and computer science, including: programming, robot design, and robotic competition strategy.

Ronald McDonald House Club is a club that does a variety of fundraising and activities to help raise money for families at the Ronald McDonald House in Hudson Valley who have children in the hospital. It gives students the opportunity to raise awareness for the RMDH and help a sub-community that is intertwined with our own. 

Students Against Destructive Decisions is a student group whose mission is to educate other students against making destructive decisions. 

Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, creating a technologically-literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. 

Smart Investments uses an electronic platform called Investopedia that allows our club to "trade" stocks.  

Join other students interested in learning about writing, composing and performing original music.  The club meets weekly and has quarterly performances. 

Yorktown High School’s art and literary magazine is a yearly publication dedicated to showcasing the many talented artists and writers attending our school. 

The Student Senate is an organization which seeks to promote greater student involvement and participation in all areas of school life.

Tri-M is an honor society for students in music. Tri-M Music Honors Society invites musical students in pursuit of spreading joy through music to apply.  Our mission is to perform, lead, and serve the community.

The concept and mission of Varsity Students Against Substance Abuse is based on the philosophy that student athletes are given a great deal of status and serve as role models for other students. 

Our award winning high school newspaper, The Voice, is an open forum for student expression and opinion that is conceived, designed and executed solely by the student body.  The Voice welcomes contributions from the entire student body: editors, writers, artists and photographers. 

Any student interested in using weights to improve his or her physical well being is invited to use the weight room after school between 1:30-3:00.

All students, grades 9 through 12, are welcome to join our staff.  Membership drive announcements will be made in September for photographers, copy editors and other positions.
