Swing Dance Society
University of York
University of York
We are an inclusive and friendly society who love swing dance! We run weekly lessons at the University of York in Lindy hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz and more. We aim to educate about the history of swing dance, as well as keeping our lessons beginner-friendly to welcome another generation of swing dancers.
Alongside our weekly lessons, we run a wide variety of socials, host termly balls (social dances), and two annual weekend events, with attendees from around the UK and sometimes even further afield. We'd love for you to join us!
Hi! We're this year's committee and we'd love to welcome you to the Uni of York Swing Dance Society! You can join swing at any point in the year so if you miss us at the Welcome Fair then don't worry.
Any questions, just drop us a DM or email and we're happy to answer any and all questions, no matter how small.
We aim to be a friendly, accessible, and welcoming society where we provide a space to have fun through swing dance.
We welcome beginners - most of us had never done any dance before uni, let alone swing.
Affordable - there no need to have membership to come along, and no hidden fees (just pay per lesson and for membership if you want to save money).
Opportunities to perform (if you want) - we often get involved with SABBs come dancing, Performing Arts Showcase, and we have our own performance group (based on who wants to join - no auditions) for our event.
Don’t need to come with a partner - though please feel free to bring a friend along!
Community feel - dance roles are not gendered and you can try out what you enjoy
No obligations to buy anything - don’t need any special footwear or clothing
Relaxed atmosphere - every single lesson is beginner-friendly so you can come as and when you’re free. Our lessons are not consecutive, and you can attend as many or as few as you wish.
Exciting events - we run two annual weekend events with people from around the country, and sometimes Europe for a celebration of swing dance!
