Articles

Articles show whether a noun is definite or indefinite. That is, whether we already know which specific item(s) is/are being talked about.

Mistakes with articles usually don't stop the reader understanding your work, but they can make your point unclear, and many mistakes can make your writing look sloppy. Make sure you check your use of articles in your proofreading.

indefinite (a / an)

  • indefinite nouns: we don't know (or it's not important) which specific item is being talked about
  • singular only
  • I ate a sandwich for lunch today (it doesn't matter which one)

definite (the)

  • definite nouns: we know which specific thing is being talked about
  • singular, plural or uncountable
  • The sandwiches in this cafe are cheap (not all sandwiches, specifically the ones in this cafe)

zero (nothing!)

  • indefinite nouns: we don't know (or it's not important) which specific item is being talked about, or we're talking about something in general
  • (usually) plural or uncountable
  • I like cheese sandwiches (in general)
