Accommodation

Update (13/01/2022): due to the University of York recruiting a large number of students for this academic year, our student accommodation has now been moved from Eden's Court to Anne Lister College on the Heslington East campus.

We will continue to provide accommodation in shared rooms in guest houses in weeks where we exceed 38 students. From January 2022 we will be trying out the Stay City Aparthotel for some groups. We continue to have a strong link with guesthouses in Fulford.

Accommodation in either Anne Lister College, or where Anne Lister College is full, in shared rooms in guesthouses/aparthotel, is included in the fee (along with tuition). This fee is 2000 NOK per student per week. For 2-week courses campus accommodation is provided from the Sunday before the course starts with check-out on the last Friday of the course, strictly at 9 am. For one-week courses accommodation is for 5 nights beginning on the Sunday before the course starts with check-out on the Friday at 9 am. It may be possible for groups or individuals to add extra nights (see below).

Extra Nights

For groups/individuals with a serious academic or practical reason to arrive early - it might be possible to arrange one or two extra nights (from Saturday or Friday before the course starts). Such requests should be sent to nsc@york.ac.uk a minimum of five weeks prior to the start of the course and can only be made through you as the course leader. Once an extra night or nights have been requested and booked, this booking is binding (i.e. it must be paid for, unless cancelled more than four weeks in advance).

For whole groups: the fee for each extra night in Anne Lister College is £25 per room, whereas for students staying in guest houses the fee is heavily subsidised at £35 for a shared room and £65 for a single. (Please note: Students do not have an individual choice as to where they are placed.)

For individual students: extra nights in Anne Lister College on the Saturday or Friday before the course starts may be requested through you as the leader and will be charged at £35 per room per night. We are unable to book extra nights in guest houses. However, for students staying in a guest house we are able to provide contact details so they can book directly with the same guest house, quoting the NSC to obtain a discounted rate.

On Campus: Anne Lister College

The majority of our students will be allocated self catered, single ensuite bedrooms in the new Anne Lister College, on the Heslington East Campus. This is a short (20 minute walk) from the NSC which is on the edge of the Heslington West Campus, in the Science Park (zone 4).

Bedrooms are divided into flats of 10, which share a kitchen. There is Free Wi-Fi. If your device is set up with Eduroam from your home institution, this should work everywhere on campus: we recommend that you set this up before you leave.

Collecting keys/Arrival

Key cards should be collected from the 24-hour reception in the Ron Cooke Hub (which is less than 5 minutes walk from Anne Lister). Anne Lister reception is also open Monday-Friday 0830-1700 for all enquiries. Key cards should be returned to the Ron Cooke Hub reception.

A note on Rooms numbers

You will give the students a room number once it has been allocated. The letter (L) at the start is for Anne Lister college, the next letter/number is your block and the following digits are your room number. The first of the digits will tell you which floor you are on. For example L/C5/015 is block C5, room 015 which is on the ground floor.

Address

The address for your rooms would be Block C, Anne Lister College, University of York, Goodricke Lane, Heslington, York, North Yorkshire, YO10 5FW.

Where we have more than 38 visiting students in one week, some participants will be accommodated in shared twin or triple bedded rooms in a guest house or aparthotel near the university. Allocation of places in guest houses is organised only through you as the course leader. If some or all of your students need to be placed in guest houses, we will provide you with details of how many and you will choose who shares with whom, and which students will stay in a guest house.

Where should leaders stay?

Most leaders book their own accommodation, often in the city centre. If you would like recommendations, to check about a hotel or B and B or its location. or for us to book something on your behalf, please get in touch via nsc@york.ac.uk. Please note that we have a heavily discounted rate at Stay City if you would like to try out the aparthotel. Please contact us for rates/with information.

Getting to Anne Lister

Public Transport

Buses 66/67 go from the train station/city centre to the University of York. The closest bus stop to Anne Lister is probably the stop opposite Lord Deramore's Primary school on Field Lane (the stop after Heslington Hall). However, for key collection and better signposting on arrival, we recommend the stop at the Kimberlow Lane (main stop for Heslington East). The Ron Cooke Hub (for key collection) is just a few minutes walk from this stop and then it is a few minutes from there to your accommodation.

Please see the map, with the Ron Cooke Hub and the bus stops circled.

Taxi

If you take a taxi, it will most likely drop you off in the carpark near the circled bus stops or at the taxi drop-off point near to Ron Cooke Hub.
