Beck's Main Modules (History of English, Sociolinguistics)
The following modules are suitable for all student types (Year Course, BA, MA, GLU, KFK) and can, by request, include a didactics focus. All modules can be delivered face-to-face in York, or online with minor adjustments for delivery method.
York Talk (with or without project work)
Uses the York environment to explore the history of English and/or sociolinguistic variation. May include small-group project work.
Can also include a guided walking tour of York.
Diverse British Voices
Discover more about English language varieties and attitudes in the UK.
Linguistic Politeness
Find out more about English identities and cultures in the UK through a discussion of the use of words like please, thank you and sorry.
Harry Potter and the chatter of British Englishes
A hands on exploration of language and society using the Harry Potter books and films.
Gweno's Main Modules (Literature, Didactics)
Gweno's modules are mostly aimed at GLU and KFK students with a strong emphasis on the classroom. In addition, for in-York KFK and GLU groups, Gweno also offers a theatre excursion and contextual lecture. For other students (BA, MA, Year Course), Gweno offers a theatre excursion and contextual lecture for in-York programmes or for online programmes a special session on poetry.

Meg's Main Modules (Critical Literacy, 'Race')
Critical Literacy: Children's Literature. Heroes of Colour
This is about allowing literature to help us (pupils, students and teachers) learn to THINK. Texts will be from writers of colour, featuring heroes of colour.
Critical Literacy: 'Race' and Power - British Writers of Colour
Students are introduced to a practice of active, questioning engagement with literary texts from British writers of colour.
Critical Literacy: 'Race' and Power - Writers of the first nations
Students are introduced to a practice of active, questioning engagement with contemporary literary texts from indigenous writers.
Critical History of 'Race' thinking
Consider the modern origins of 'race'-thinking in relation to the developments of western, particularly British, imperialism from the 17th century onwards.
Terry's Main Modules (Education, Politics)
Democracy and Education (GLU/KFK only)
Think about the politics of teaching and the teaching of politics.
Power and Persuasion
Exploration of the use of discourse by the powerful, including how individuals manipulate others.
Sustainable Development
These sessions consider the scale of environmental and ecological problems and then how environmental issues interact with political and economic systems around the world.
Consumption: A story of prestige and prejudice
This is about the socio-cultural role of objects, experiences, tastes and manners.
Single Sessions
There is usually sufficient space in a programme for at the very most FOUR single sessions (by different staff members) in addition to main modules.
