Hiya! Thanks for visiting our website and welcome to our team page. I'm Noémie (pronounced No-eh-mee) and I am the team lead. I come from the South of France, I love food, gardening, dancing and most importantly spending time with my precious family of 3 boys.

In my role, I teach and support our undergraduate students while trying to inspire them to do more neuroscience. I design fun and impactful research projects using our zebrafish leukodystrophy models for undergrad, Masters and PhD students. I love everything related to collaborative work, team work and team dynamics, you'll often see me wandering around corridors, labs, offices trying to add posters/ banners/ printouts related to wellbeing, good research practices and team vision. I am an advocate for leukodystrophies and patient-focused research, and our group makes it a priority to communicate our research with the leukodystrophy community.

My door is always open, I don't work on Wednesdays and I love walking around our beautiful campus while talking research!

Diogo Candeias, PhD Student

Hello! My name is Diogo, and I am a second-year PhD student in the Hamilton Lab. I grew up in Lisbon but have lived in Yorkshire since I was an undergrad. I like cooking, exercising, but most of all, going into town for a walk or a drink when the weather is nice and sunny.

In the lab, I use the zebrafish and fruit fly animal models to research a novel leukodystrophy, so you can often find me in the aquarium or fly room taking care of all my animals. I am very passionate about outreach activities, so I am frequently busy preparing activities at public events and schools to showcase our research to the community.

As one of the postgraduate student representatives, I also organise and spend time at social and student-led events with other PhD students from our department to foster a better research and well-being community at the University.

I am always available for a chat, so if there is anything you would like to know, don't hesitate to ask!

Sam Squires, MRC DiMeN PhD student

Hello, I’m Sam and I’m a first year PhD student in the Hamilton lab. I grew up in Manchester and it’s also where I obtained my MSci in Neuroscience. My project focuses on understanding the role of TMEM106B in a recently characterised leukodystrophy and I’ll be using zebrafish and mammalian cell models to investigate this.

I love all things science but when I’m not in the lab I enjoy running, climbing, cooking and playing guitar (badly!).

Abi Mallard, Research Technician

Hello, I am Abi and I am Noémie's Research Technician!

I have an MSc in Neuroscience and Translational Medicine from QMUL, and a year's worth of experience working with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) studying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and traumatic brain injury at QMUL as a Research Assistant. I have recently moved to York to join Noémie in researching leukodystrophies, and I am very excited to be setting up the new iPSC laboratory to aid this important research! I love being in the laboratory, as well as learning Spanish, painting watercolours and going to the gym!
