Overview of project methods
Project participants
The project involved 62 interviews with minoritised academics and professional services staff working in EDI research environments within UK Higher education institutions including:
Open University
University of Bradford
University of Cambridge
University of Chester
University of Edinburgh
University of Hull
University of Northampton
University of Salford
University of Sheffield
University of York
University of the West of England
Project measures
Interview questions were developed from a review of existing equitable research practice frameworks and relevant literature. Interviews began by asking participants to outline their EDI-related work and their motivations for beginning and continuing on with this work. The questions then focused on participant experiences of completing this work thus far, the recognition they have received for their work, and how supported they feel in their roles. Interviews lasted around 45 - 60 minutes and participants were compensated with £10 Amazon vouchers.
Project analysis
Interview data was analysed using Reflexive Thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2012) which was selected as all researchers belonged to minoritised backgrounds. It was thus important to be consistently aware of the role of the researcher expereince on data analysis.
