The Disabilty Community Toolkit aims to help provide guidance and support for anyone who would like to start and build their own student community within a department or another aspect of University life. It contains both practical ideas and advice, as well as stories from those who have been part of community building within the DISCO project.
This toolkit gets at the heart of the DISCO Projects aims to foster community and build a sense of belonging for disabled (including neurdivergent) students. The first and current version of this toolkit was put together as part of the DISCO Community Ambassador Project, where student interns with guidance from their PhD mentor collated their experiences and knowledge of building student communities as part of the project.
It's hoped this toolkit will help to aid others in growing communities and further support the DISCO Project aims.
The Toolit is made up of 5 key section designed around key stages of community building and support. Use the links below or the menu panel to find the section that best applies to you and take a look!
This section provides guidance on sustaining communities in an environment with constant change.
This section provides guidance on ways to support student communities through mentoring.
We very much want this toolkit to grow and evolve. There are many forms of community and ways to build and support it's growth and we'd love to capture this by revisiting and updating the toolkit periodically. Visit the 'Contributing to the Toolkit' page to contribute or make a suggestion for the toolkit.
