Supporting Disability Community Research & Practice in Higher Education
We are the York DISCO (Disability Community) project. We're a small team of students and staff aiming to improve disabled students' experiences within higher education through building community and belonging. This includes students with long-term physical and mental health conditions and/or neurodivergent conditions.
The project is driven by disabled and ally students, student interns and dedicated staff. It focuses on exploring and understanding how being part of a community can impact disabled students, as well as the challenges and barriers that disabled students may face and the impact these have on their sense of belonging.
The DISCO project had great success at this years Inclusive Impact Awards.
Our 'Including Disabled People in Research toolkit' won the Bridge Builder Category, with our 'DISCO Community Ambassadors' project getting a high commendation for the same award.
