August 20, 2025 - As the political tensions arise in Texas, El Pasoans come out and support Texas Democrats: Beto O’Rourke, Rep. Veronica Escobar, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, and Rep. Joaquin Castro. Chants and cheers can be heard in the Elmont Event Center as over 900 supporters gather to hear about current political issues, from statewide issues like the Texas redistricting plan all the way to federal issues from those like the Trump administration.
The event, organized by O’Rourke’s PAC Powered by People on August 20, was framed as a call to action for El Pasoans and West Texans to prepare for the 2026 midterm elections.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas delivered one of the most direct speeches of the night, criticizing the Republican Party’s stance on healthcare and social programs. “This [Republican Party] is not a pro-life party, this is a pro-death party,” she said, referring to recent efforts to reduce public welfare spending. She added, “Or you can look at the fact that they said we want to take away healthcare from seventeen million people, also deleting one trillion dollars out of the healthcare economy, raising premiums on every single one of you.”

Rep. Joaquin Castro, of San Antonio, shared a personal story about his battle with cancer just a few years ago and the story of his grandmother who relied off of Medicare and Social Security. He stated that these cuts are a matter of “life and death”. Rep. Veronica Escobar, the representative of El Paso, emphasized the importance of getting involved with social action organizations in El Paso by canvassing, registering voters, and attending events, protests, and rallies alike.

Finally Beto O’Rourke ended off the night with his speech talking about getting Texans to vote, addressed the recent redistricting plans Texas lawmakers have implemented, and further criticized the actions of the Trump Administration saying, “That is how these people win power, hold power, grow that power and leave people completely out of power.".
Talking to attendees after the rally, most said they felt hopeful about the event with one saying that, “This is what Texas needs right now.”. Beto O’Rouke and his PAC, Powered by People continue forward to help swing republican seats this upcoming midterm to help fight against the redistricting policies set forward.

September 15, 2025 - Book club is all about reading, community, and having fun! If you are interested in joining the Book Club, we have meetings on Wednesdays during both lunches. We discuss what we’ve read during the weeks between meetings and discuss about what we've found interesting. We also do fun activities such as voting on which book we should read next, writing down our favorite book scenes, and sometimes book bingo!
As the new school year starts and new club members appear, Book Club has already elected its new officers for the 2025-2026 school year. We hope we can also gain new members during the school year, especially when the holidays are approaching. We could use extra hands to decorate the library and set up fundraisers.
There is a current fundraiser for the book club where you can buy an old yearbook for $20! You can always ask the librarian, Mrs. Villalobos, if you have any questions about purchasing old yearbooks or for more information about our school’s Book Club! Mrs. Villalobos is not only our librarian, but she is also in charge of UIL and GT. If you have any inquires about these groups, you can always find her in the library.
So, if you’re interested or want to learn more about Book Club, you can always come to the library and talk to Mrs. Villalobos about our schedule and activities! It’s never too late to join the club!
