September 23, 2025 - In Texas, particularly in predominantly Hispanic communities, mariachi has allowed students to connect deeply with their heritage while developing musicianship, discipline, and teamwork. As more schools recognize the value of this genre, mariachi ensembles have gained visibility on competitive stages such as the UIL State Mariachi Contest and national music festivals, standing alongside traditional choir, band, and orchestra programs.
At Hanks High School, this growth is reflected in the inspiring journey of Mariachi Los Trovadores. In 2011, Mr. Orlando Guerrero envisioned creating a mariachi program that would showcase the rich musical traditions of the community. Although the idea initially faced challenges and limited support, Mr. Guerrero’s perseverance led to the founding of Los Trovadores in 2015. Starting as a small club made up of mostly dedicated choir students, the group committed itself to learning to play the instruments needed to complete a mariachi ensemble.
Over the years, the ensemble’s commitment and passion propelled them to remarkable achievements, including superior ratings at the 2017-2018 UIL contest and a first-place victory at the WorldStrides Music Festival in California that same year. A turning point came in 2018 when Dr. De La Torre recognized the group’s potential and provided vital resources, helping the program grow into one of the region’s most respected mariachi ensembles. Currently, the Hanks High School mariachi teaching team is made up of several directors, including Mr. Guerrero, Mr. Contreras, Dr. Altamirano, and Mrs. Urias-Couder.
Today, Mariachi Los Trovadores is a superior-rated, state-recognized, and award-winning program, and the only mariachi ensemble in YISD history to earn a superior rating at the UIL State Contest to this date. At the 2025 UIL state mariachi festival, Mariachi Los Trovadores achieved straight superior ratings for the first time, and Jason Castillo, a first-year mariachi and all-state choir member, was honored for his moving interpretation of “Maria Elena.”
Looking ahead, the group is excited to return to California in 2026 with the Hanks High School choirs to compete once again at the Worldstrides Music Festival. They are also breaking new ground by introducing a junior varsity mariachi ensemble to UIL competition and launching an all-female and all-male mariachi groups, a historic first for Hanks High School and a reflection of mariachi’s growing presence and impact in today’s schools.

September 17, 2025 - In a faraway kingdom, there ruled a loving King, Henry the 1st, and his wife, Queen Eleanor. Henry was loved by his kingdom, for he was a strict, but kind king. As for Eleanor, she felt like she was living in her husband's shadow. The kingdom didn’t even care about her existence. Eleanor grew envious of her husband, so she made a plan. A plan that would leave the people no choice, but to acknowledge her and her triumphs. She then visited a witch's hut and paid her to cast a spell on the king to render him useless, and obsolete.
The witch, in desperate need of the money, agreed, but the witch would only cast the spell for four years, for she held no anger towards King Henry.
The next day, the king woke up without his crown, nor did he wear his silky nightgown, a gift from his wife, which he held so dear. Henry wasn’t himself anymore, he examined his fur and small body; then it hit him. The king was a capybara. When the knights found him they threw him out.
Eleanor was pleased with herself, as she now had all the kingdom’s eyes on her. Except for one guard, Sir Knight, Henry's most trusted and loyal knight. He had quickly found out that something was wrong after finding Henry’s quarters empty in the dead of night. Sir Knight has spent the entire evening searching for him in all of his favorite spots, the balcony, the library, and even the fountains outside of his palace, yet he found nothing. It was already morning when the other guards found Henry in his new form and tossed him aside. Sir knight, for some reason, felt compelled to follow him, despite Queen Eleanor warning him not to, for if he did, he would not be permitted to return. He accepted his fate and was quickly thrown out.
When he arrived, he witnessed the witch tending to the tiresome capybara. Before he could question her, the witch noticed his presence and seemed to vanish into thin air. The loyal knight sat by his king until they both drifted off into a deep slumber, assuring Henry that he would stay by him until the day he drew his final breath.
