This organization was founded by a rural student from Minnesota who attended the UChicago's Rural Leaders Summer Program. Please visit her CARS website to learn more about her organization's mission and work!
About Calling All Rural Students: (CARS) is a rural student higher education empowerment project founded to enhance the number of talented rural students applying to America’s highly selective colleges. According to the rootEd Alliance, 32% of U.S. high school students live in rural communities and small towns. However, the percentage of rural students attending America’s highly selective colleges is far less. We want to help change this through research, outreach, education, and resources.
During this college essay workshop hosted by Elena Wandzilak, Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Washington University in St. Louis, students received practical advice and tips on how to write impactful and memorable college essays. She walks students through some writing exercises and explains why these exercises will help students tell strong personal stories to admissions committees. Below you can access the recording and the presentation of this workshop.
While visiting a college campus is a great way to get a "feel" for the school, this is not always a viable option for students because visits require time, travel, and money. But do not be discouraged! It is becoming common practice for universities to create and share virtual tours of their campus.
To virtually "visit" over 500 U.S. universities, you can visit this YouTube channel.
Here is an example of the virtual tours that you can take of each higher education institution. Learn more about Colgate University!
There are U.S. universities that have made the commitment to make high-quality education accessible to all students regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. The commitment entails meeting 100% of student financial need to ensure that if admitted to their institution, students will not have to worry about whether they can afford it or not.
Some institutions have gone a step further by committing to not include any loans into students' financial aid packages awarded to ensure that their students are not graduating with unmanageable debt.
Vanderbilt University, through their "Opportunity Vanderbilt" initiative, is a great example of this commitment. Learn more about their 3 key commitments to admitted students in the video below.

Are you interested in visiting a university but cannot afford the travel costs to get there? Many universities are investing in strong prospective candidates through College Fly-in programs.
Fly-in programs help students with covering the cost of travel. To check if the universities you are interested in offer this opportunity, please visit the College Greenlight's 2019 comprehensive list of programs.
For many institutions, being admitted as a participant for their fly-in programs means that they are highly interested in you as a prospective applicant. You are showing them that you are highly interested in their school, and they are reciprocating that sentiment by inviting you to come learn more about them to see if the school is a good "fit" for you.
Here is a recording of a webinar that College Greenlight hosted this year regarding College Fly-in programs. The speakers on this webinar are all admissions officers at various institutions, and they provide important information about why, how, and when to apply for fly-in programs.
