YES-App Recruitment Details
WHO?
Promising students who are intellectually curious and who value higher education
Low-income, first-generation college student, and/or member of other historically underrepresented communities
Current 6th graders from the following 7 elementary schools:
Bethel School
Cove Creek School
Green Valley School
Mabel School
Blue Ridge Elementary School
Mountain View Elementary School
Westwood Elementary School
Applicants are not required to be previously identified as “Academically and Intellectually Gifted” (AIG) at school
HOW?
Teachers and administrators at the affiliated schools nominate qualifying students
Nominated students are invited to attend a YES-Appalachia Information Session. Those who participate in a YES Information Session will be invited to apply to YES-Appalachia. Print and digital versions will become available in late January.
Students who submit a COMPLETE application will be invited to interview with YES-App staff
Interviews go for 30-45 minutes
Conducted via Google Meet in a group setting
Interviews are only with students, not parents/guardians
After interviews, YES-App staff will conduct a holistic review of all applicants in order to select the new cohort
There is no minimum or maximum amount of students that will be admitted to YES-Appalachia
YES-Appalachia staff are interested in inviting and supporting students who are good fit for YES and who will take advantage of the resources offered to them by YES-Appalachia
WHY?
It is completely FREE! There is no cost associated with being a YES-App scholar
YES-Appalachia is committed to scholars from identification in 6th grade, through high school, college, graduate/professional school (if that is a path that the scholar chooses), all the way up to career placement
