Examples:
I like bacon.
He likes to swim.
We like to dance.
Examples:
Bacon is pleasing to me.
To swim is pleasing to him.
To dance is pleasing to us.
This means GUSTAR always matches the thing or things that come after it, the things that are liked NOT the people that are doing the liking. This means we are only going to have 2 forms of gustar:
Since we are no longer the subjects of the sentence, we no longer use the normal subject pronouns we have learned in the past. Things like YO, TU, EL, and ELLA are being replaced with the following.
Me gusta hablar español.
I like to speak Spanish.
Te gusta leer libros.
You like to read books.
Le gusta vivir en Washington.
He likes to live in Washington.
Le gustan hamburguesas.
She likes hamburgers.
Nos gusta pizza.
We like pizza.
Les gustan los videos de gatos.
They like the cat videos.
Les gustan los tacos de carne asada.
You all like carne asado tacos.
Sometimes you need to add clarity or would like to emphasis who it is you are talking about. If for example you say "Le gusta la clase de arte" its not clear who the "LE" refers to. Is this a boy or a girl, it's not clear from the statement. In these situations we add the following phrases on to the front.
I know you don't like somethings, and saying that in Spanish is very straight forward. In order to say you don't like something simply place "NO" in front of the pronoun.
NO me gusta Taco Bell. (I do not like Taco Bell)
A ti NO te gusta la clase de biología. (You do not like biology class.)
A él NO le gusta Superman. (He does not like Superman.)
A nosotros NO nos gustan las arañas. (We do not like spiders.)
The pronoun (me, te, le, nos, les) is chained to the verb (gusta, gustan) and should not be separated.
Don't put anything in between these two.
