“Instead of ‘I love you’ we could say ‘Lovou’.”
The world has undergone a bit of turbulence since this play was published in 2015. Through political discourse, Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, a spike in human rights activism, there have been a great deal of major changes striking the planet at every turn. We are living in a time of great change. It is through this change that we seek to move forward and continue discovering the wonders of the unknown. It’s easy to think: “What hasn’t happened? What could possibly happen next?” Essentially: what is next on the yearly life-event bingo card?
This play addresses the idea of change in an extremely unique, yet jarringly relevant fashion. Steiner created a world that urges audiences to look beyond the whimsy of pet cemeteries, and Morse code, and lemons and reflect on the idea of what happens to a relationship when forced to endure a major world-shifting change. There are highs, lows, ebbs, flows. It all forces us to hold a mirror up to who we are, and what we present to those around us. What do we keep when we’re forced to change?
Bring yourself into the world of Oliver and Bernadette, put yourself in their shoes, live and learn along with them. 140 words a day, how would you keep it all together?
