Placement

A wide variety of placements are possible. The co-op teachers are willing to work with students, parents, as well as members of the business community to secure a placement that meets the student's learning needs, desires and interests.

Three Factors that could impede securing a placement.....

1.Transportation

(i.e. student's ability to travel independently to the workplace)

2.Liability Issues

3.Specificity of Placement Type

Credits & Hours

How are they achieved?

Depending on the number of credits a student selects, that will determine the number of hours to be completed per day at the student's placement for the duration of the placement period.

Note: that Ministry of Labour dictates that employees who work 5 consecutive hours are entitled to a 30 minute (unpaid) eating period/lunch/dinner. Therefore, a 4-credit co-op student is entitled to a 30 minute eating period, however, they must extend their day by 30 minutes to compensate for the period of time they spend eating and not working.

PLACEMENT INTERVIEW

Co-op students attend an interview at their respective placements. The interviews allow students to meet their prospective supervisor, as well as, get a sense of what they will be doing at their placement and ultimately, to determine the time required to travel to the placement.

In order to prepare students for the interview, cover letter writing and resume writing occurs prior to the interview so that when students attend their interviews, they can present their supervisors with both documents.
