Our council plans to integrate the visual and performing arts into the SBA community through different events and activities. Our council is also a safe space for like minded individuals to meet and grow together. This ties to one of our big goals this year which is to bring the members of the council together through various social activities outside of council duties.
You don't have to be an expert artist, musician, or performer to be a member of Arts Council. We are looking for creative students who are genuinely enthusiastic about bringing the arts to SBA. If you can be dedicated, devoted, and reliable, we would love for you to be a part of our team.
Time Commitment: Arts Council will hold 1-2 meetings per week this year. Mandatory meetings will be held on Tuesdays at 2:40 p.m.
Membership Limit: Arts Council accepts about 35-40 members each year.
On Halloween Arts Council puts on two annual traditions: the Pumpkin-Decorating Contest and the Haunted House.
During first period, pumpkins go out to each homeroom for decorating. Classes then bring their pumpkins to compete for categories: the scariest, the funniest, and most creative.
During Period 3, Arts Council, puts on a themed Haunted House in the Drama room. With the help of the talented actors and actresses of SBA, this event is always a huge hit and a great way to celebrate Halloween.
Every year the councils of SBA help to prepare the school for the Christmas season. In the 12 days leading up to Christmas Break, we present fun daily activities and sales to bring in the holiday spirit.
Arts Council helps contribute to this by putting up decorations all over the school. Every year, create display boards, similar to the one's that line the Macy's windows in New York. Our whole council helps create this beautiful displays which are placed in the atrium, right in the middle of all the action here at SBA. We vote on different Christmas themes for these boards so that every member gets to work on something they enjoy.
Art Attack is our week long event that is all about showing off the arts at SBA. Each year, we pick a theme and create many fun, art-related activities for students to participate in throughout the week.
Students compete for chances to win points for their grade. Whichever grade has the most points by the end of the week wins!
Some of the many popular activities each year during Art Attack are:
School-wide scavenger hunt
Coloured civvies day
Paint races
Theme music over the PA
Performances from the band/choir
Arts Night is Arts Council's biggest event, held yearly in May.
It includes a talent show, where students with a love for the performing arts showcase their talents to parents, students, staff, and the rest of the school community. There is also an art auction, which is made of art donated by artists from the school. All proceeds made from the auction will be donated to charity. Arts Night also features displays of student-made art, as well as an awards ceremony to celebrate the efforts of the many artistic students at SBA.
