THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE for the IB Diploma
Theory of knowledge (TOK) is a course about critical thinking and inquiring on the nature of knowledge and the process of knowing. It is a core element of the DP that provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the knowledge, beliefs and opinions that they have built up from their years of academic studies and their lives outside the classroom. The overall aim of TOK is to unite the subjects that students encounter in the rest of their DP studies by reflecting on how knowledge is arrived at in different disciplines and areas of knowledge. This allows students to develop an enduring fascination with the richness of knowledge.
TOK encourages students to be more aware of their own assumptions and perspectives, to consider the diversity and richness of different perspectives and to think deeply and carefully about complicated issues.
While the TOK course does not cover in depth philosophical content, it does explore Epistemology and the study of knowledge. This video covers the essential aspects of the TOK course.
