Growth & Changes in Animals - What would it be like to be a Northern Cardinal living in the forest? Learners will find out as they are guided through the life cycles of living organisms such as mammals, birds, amphibians, and insects. Through a story-telling approach, students will explore the impact of human activities on the lives of animals, and discover how animals impact their human lives as well.

Kortright Center
Loose Parts Play – Using natural materials of all sorts, students will play and guide themselves through stations that focus on art, music, math, literacy, physical education, and inquiry. Watch them wonder, and the amazement of unstructured play that takes shape in this truly engaging program.
Find a Bug Orienteering - Students are introduced to the parts of a map and how to use a map to find various locations. The students will progress to a specially designed course where they will be able to use their new-found mapping skills, such as recognizing symbols, using a legend, estimating distances, keeping a map oriented, using a compass rose and landmarks, and problem-solving to find our “hidden” insects all around the conservation.

Nature Art-Artists all around the world are inspired by nature. In this program, students will learn about some of those artists who value nature in their artworks, and will be given time to create a masterpiece of their own. Materials can include watercolour paint, pastels, pencils, and/or natural materials.

Diversity of Animals -Through inquiry-based learning and simulation activities, the diversity that exists between and amongst groups of animals will be more closely examined. Students are introduced to a variety of local animals to discover and explore the characteristics, adaptations, similarities, and differences that make each animal group unique.

Animal Orienteering-Students will develop essential skills in map reading and interpretation while also learning about different animal groups. Using their newfound mapping skills, students will progress through a series of orienteering courses that focus on different animal groups and their unique physical characteristics.
Friends of the Forest-Explore the forests of Scanlon Creek on this interactive hike to learn how the plants and animals that live here survive through different seasons. A greater appreciation for all the forest friends and how human interactions can affect them will be gained through a variety of activities and structured nature exploration.
