This course takes a holistic approach that focuses on individual and collaborative authentic learning activities. With the purposeful integration of technology, FSL101 offers a balanced approach that prepares students for real life settings. In a traditional passive learning environment, typically the instructor takes charge of the classroom, presents lectures while students take notes and is the only one to assess students’ progress (Bello, 2018). As a result, "students often respond with minimal interest and complain anonymously in their evaluations that there is insufficient time allocated for oral practice and minimal feedback provided by the instructor’s assessment of their work" (Bello, 2018, p.1). Our goal with FSL101 is to shift from a traditional environment to a class where students take ownership for their learning. Through small group live Google Meets, students have the opportunity to practice what they are learning and can seek support as needed. Students are expected to reflect on their learning and record their journey throughout the course in order to further set goals. Through descriptive feedback, students will have be able to focus on refining their French communication, written and reading skills. In addition to self-reflections and teacher feedback, classmates will have the opportunity to asses their peers. A key component in this course is using technological tools such as Flipgrid, Padlet and Google apps, as well as game based learning (Kahoot, Quizlet, Blooket).
