What techniques do contemporary artists (Marshall, Crosby, Nisenbaum) use to create their paintings? What messages do these artists convey through their works? Please give specific examples. They merge their traditional methods with more modern day media to create mixed media conceptual work. Crosby's message conveys her traditional Nigerian life mixed in with her American life to intersect together, while Marshall conveys through his art the presence, assertation, and humanity of black life, while avoiding themes such as trauma. Lastly, Nisenbaum conveys her work to putting a face on people who she feels are looked over by society, and makes them stand out. These contemporary artists have one thing that makes them stand out, they all make the viewer experience conceptual ideas over skill
Paragraph 2:
What techniques does Peter Bruegel use to create his paintings? What messages does he convey through his works? Please give specific examples. He uses undershading, winter scenes and oak panels only millimeters thick. His messages portray the pandemonium of life, the predictability and foolishness of human nature, and moral lessons. An example is his famous work, Children's games, while the children are happily running about, the adults are frowning, carrying heavy loads, and cleaning. This represents how seriously grown ups take their work, while the children enjoy their life. This is meant to critique adults for taking the children's games so lightly, when to the children, they have as much significance as the adults work to them. One last example is the triumph of death, where skeletons are riding into a village, and slaughtering the people. This depicts at the time that humans had only a finite knowledge of what plagues and death was, and entices the viewer into thinking what it was like to live in those times.
Paragraph 3:
Discuss the differences between the way in which these contemporary artists and Peter Bruegel approach storytelling?
Peter Bruegel approached his way of storytelling with satirical, hidden narrative meaning, meant to entice the viewer to figure out what the meaning was for themselves, while the answer hid behind detailed drawings of daily life. Contemporary artists use direct narrative to tell the viewer exactly what is going on rather than mock or educate the viewer. Contemporary artists also take a more direct approach to political problems, like facing them head on, while Bruegel took on a more veiled approach to insinuate what was happening that was political. All of these reasons and more are what makes contemporary artists and peter breugal different in many ways.
