Reflection:
I learned how to do a newspaper slip transfer using underglaze. This technique was really fun to do, and I think if I had known about it earlier, I might have tried it on some of my other pieces. It took a little bit to understand, and I had some help from Mrs. Houston and Celia, but once I understood what I needed to do, I thought, wow this is so easy! The process is simple: you paint your design onto newspaper using underglaze, let it dry, then you paint on two layers of slip and let that dry. Then you paint one layer of slip onto your clay where you are going to lay the design. Once dry, you place the piece of newspaper face down onto the slipped clay, press down lightly, then use a roller or rubber tool and run across the newspaper to ensure the best transfer. Peel back the newspaper carefully to reveal your design. You might need to put it back down and go over it again if one part isn’t sticking well. Overall, this is a great technique to use if you want more control over a design, have a very intricate design, have a curved piece, or are looking for something new to try. I could see myself using this technique again on things like mugs, bowls, or plates!
