Stoneware, 3 in x 2.9 in x 2.9 in
Purpose: Use a 3” x 3” post-it as a template to create a multiple-sided, lidded box out of slabs. Tie together the different sides and lid of the box with connected shapes/concepts.
Reflection:
I got my inspiration from my concept map, I decided to combine Ocean and Shells because I knew they would be easy to combine into one idea, and I could make my piece functional and realistic. When I was drawing out my initial design, I decided to do a wave on each of the 4 sides and make the ‘water’ connect so that the pieces flowed together better. Then I knew I wanted a moon and a star on each side as well. I created the waves and moon by water etching, which is a new technique to me that I found extremely sensible and efficient. It involves using a previously cut tape stencil that you apply to the clay, then use a sponge to wipe over it until you feel a sort of ridge. The clay under the tape then becomes lifted compared to the dropped surface. I used a rubber-tipped tool to impress the stars in the four right corners. For my lid, I knew I wanted it to look seamless, so that is why I cut it at an angle into the top of my box. Then I created my shell handle, carved it with a angled loop tool, and slipped and scored it onto my box; unfortunately, it did end up falling off after firing but I managed to glue it back on with some glaze. The elements I think make people want to keep looking at it is the waves, I really liked the process of integrating them into the box design and I like how they wrap around the whole thing. I really enjoyed this project, I thought it was a fun and creative way to capture something we love. I personally loved learning how to create the box from slabs, then designing what I wanted to put on it. I think the part I did not like was glazing it, it was very tedious and the glazes I was working with were giving me a bit of a hard time. But with some perseverance and enthusiasm, I was able to create a box that I am super proud of, my favorite part being the waves. If I were to do this slab form again, I would take more time putting my box together and make sure that my dimensions stay the same, just because mine ended up being a little bit wonky.
