Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Kerry James Marshall, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
REFLECTION
I used the line technique to show value in my drawing, influenced by the technique of Henry Moore. To display value and value changes, I drew more, darker lines in the shadowed areas, and l used fewer, lighter lines in the areas where the light hit.
A huge difference I noticed between my pre-instructional drawing and my final still-life drawing is my improvement in being able to create value. When I was doing the pre-instructional drawings, I didn’t really have a good idea of how to create realistic value.
To create a convincing still-life drawing, you need to know how to make 3d shapes with a perspective point. You also need to know how to use value scales to show dimensions and value within your objects.
