Describe your process of creating this piece--both the physical process and what you were thinking about as you made your decisions. There should be at least 4 steps listed. (hint: the words reed and glue should appear in your paragraph)
First, I got the reed from the sink and brought it over to my table where my sculpture was going to be created. Then I thought about how I would go about it and where I should start. After brainstorming for a bit, I just let my hands take over to see where they would take me. Then after I had no more reed left to use, I took a step back and looked at what I’d made. I wanted to try again with less negative space, so I removed all the paperclips holding the reed together and repeated what I had just done, but making sure to loop the reed closer together. After finishing my second practice sculpture, I thought it looked better than the last but knew that I could make it even better, so I unclipped the reed again and started over. This time, I used multiple strands of reed to create more volume, loops, curves, and shapes. I kept collecting more reed until I was happy with the result. Then I unclipped the paperclips one by one, gluing the reed together where the paperclips attached them. After the glue dried, I examined my sculpture, analyzing where the best spot would be to add the paper. Once I found the areas, I used a yogurt container to trace a circle, and it ended up being a perfect size. I then glued the edge of the circle, carefully sticking the red paper to it. I wanted to add one more area of emphasis, so I traced paper around a different spot and cut out that tracing. I glued the edge of that spot and stuck the yellow paper to it. I was happy with the result and concluded that my sculpture was complete.
Where do you see variety in your sculpture? What have you done to show emphasis?
My sculpture includes a variety of shapes and loops sizes. I did this by adding more reed strands. To show emphasis, I added red and yellow paper to two spots I thought would be perfect for my area of emphasis.
What have you learned about the art form “sculpture” while doing this project?
While doing this project, I learned how limitless the boundaries are. While doing my brainstorming, I learned that you can do so many different things with just one strand of reed. I also learned how free-handed they can be, and that they can turn out amazing with no guide at all.
For the criteria of the Drawing in Space sculpture, I think that this piece worked best. I think this because there's a clear variety of sizes and loops, it has areas of emphasis, and there's a good balance of both positive and negative space.
