Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
Reflection:
My art is most like Van Gogh’s. I used small dots to create value and shading similar to how he uses short lines. The dots that I used allowed me to carefully layer different areas of the drawing with shadows, and I believe that that helps make the values in my drawing stand out from each other.
The first necessary skill you need to create a still life drawing is mastering and sketching in different perspectives, this helps you plan your drawing. Another you need is scale, choosing how big things in your drawing are in comparison to other things. Another skill you need is shading: being able to choose which style of shading you are doing, and how dark this is. And the final thing you need is time: Making sure not to rush your drawing so that you can create the best work possible.
I notice that the first drawing I completed was done with longer shading lines. I also notice that that was definitely not my favorite shading style. So, when trying my second drawing, I used pointillism. I have learned that shading takes multiple layers of values, and it is very hard to shade a drawing without shading smaller parts of it before and after.
