There are many different skills that are necessary to paint facial features using grayscale. One is good observational skills. In order to be as accurate as possible with your facial features, you need to be able to look at your reference photo well enough to paint it well. Another skill that is necessary is being able to mix a good range of values. When you have a photo that’s been put in grayscale, there are many different shades on it. In order to accurately capture this, you need to be able to mix colors that give a good sense of contrast while also feeling like there is a bit of fading from light to dark.
